(event report from the Performing Arts Guild)This past weekend at our Shire’s main event Cutlasses and Corsairs, we had a great time. The afternoon started off with a class on the progression of English Church music during the Renaissance, taught by Dr. Claire Scott (an expert in Early Music). Later on there were two Bardic Competitions. First, the Minstrels and Bards in our Shire of Castlemere (Jacksonville, FL) for the right to be the Bard of Castlemere. It was a great competition and not wanting to seem boastful, I was chosen as the winner. Anyway, the real fun kicked in when we held the “Warrior Bard of Trimaris” competition, which is open to all who were at the event. There were a lot of exciting participants and it was tough to pick a winner:
Warrior Bard & Musical Arts…………..Lord Corwyn
Spoken Arts…………..Jean Francesca
Jongleur Arts………….Rhiannon Bjornsdottir
Being a bit of a homer, I would like to commend two fairly new members of our Shire who participated in their first major Bardic Competitions: Sorsha inghean Leod & Thorunn Viggedatter (Herr Wilhelm Frawenlop)

There will be tons of shopping and children’s activities.
(Event report) The war has been dubbed “Flood Wars, A River Runs Through it” among other names I’ve heard, but that one is my favorite. Things were going very well up until Thursday, then the Gods decided we were having too much fun and put an end to all that. We got torrential rain and wind gusts in excess of about 50 mph. Then it got cold as well. By Friday, Hell really broke loose. They were trying to decide what to do about the battles when the Gods stepped in again and made the decision for them. The lightning showed up with more rain and wind in it’s wake. By noon on Friday, all war point activities had been canceled. The Gods won that battle. However, they couldn’t win the battle over fun. There were many die-hards who, like myself, decided that we had driven this far and, by (or despite) the Gods we were at least going to party!!!! So we partied…and partied…and partied! 🙂 By Friday night, about 1/3 of the people had left site and headed home. By Saturday night we down to about 1/10 or less. But we still did our best to make up for those who left. The Calontir Royal encampment has suffered sever damage in the storms and they ended up in a vacated cabin next to the Trimaris Ghetto (mostly An Crosaire and friends). Mistress Elfwyn had been running a camp kitchen for and with about 40 of us, but half of them had left by Saturday. We had plenty-o-food, so we invited the entire Calontir encampment to join us. Then we added the An Tir Royalty as well as the King of the Outlands. We all got dressed in the best garb we had with us, and hosted a Royal dinner for 3 Kingdoms. After the meal we all enjoyed a Bardic session for about an hour and a half. We kept trading back and forth, taking turns between the Kingdoms represented, in sharing some kind of entertainment. We had an incredibly good time! The next morning (Sunday) we fed them again for breakfast. We received a lovely surprise that morning. The Calontirians sent over a gift basket with many goodies to share among everyone who hosted them as a thank you for the hospitality. One of their Knights (I’m ashamed to admit that I don’t remember his name) told me how amazed they all were that we’d just take them in like that. I told him that this sort of thing is what we’re all here for. The War is really for friendship…..the fighting is just an excuse to get there for it. I myself had a wonderful time. I spent every evening going around to different encampments with my guitar and songbook. I was amazed at the ease with which I was welcomed wherever I went. I know what that Calontir Knight felt like, but had forgotten until I went to the War. Then when
it was our turn to do the welcoming, it was so natural that we never even thought twice about it.
That, in and of itself, was worth the 1000+ mile round trip and even the storms. Master Rurik Petrovitch Stoianov
Spring Coronation
Talewinds, February AS XXXIII, 1999 On 3-19/21-99 On 3-19/21-99, the Barony of An Crosaire proudly presents the coronation of their Royal Highnesses AnRidire Tairdhealbhach an Cait Dubh and Baroness Cathlin Emryss of Ibernia, to be held at Camp Wewa. At the end of TRM Alain and Judith’s court, tragedy struck, King Alain was handed a poison cup and he died immediately. Insincere words of condolences were uttered by TRH Tearlach and Cathlin, and an offer of protection was given to Queen Judith. She wisely declined and stated that she would prefer to retire to her estates in the far north of Trimaris. Tearlach then claimed the throne by his own hand and the populace acclaim and placed the crown on his own head. He proclaimed Cathlin as his queen. At this moment a stranger appeared in court claiming the throne as his right, claiming to be Gaston, the older brother of Alain. He stated that he was sent on a quest to the far south and was lost in the land of ice and snow and stupid flightless birds for one day and one night. They were a long day and night. On his return he had received word that his brother had taken the throne, and now he finds that a stranger was on the throne. After a short discussion, complete with sword and spear points, Gaston decided that his claim to the throne was not that important and he would retire to the estates of his brother along with his brothers wife. (In this action, Alain de Viellechamps managed to change his name to Gaston)

(Event report)Did you ever go to an event where a few days later you’re still shaking your head about how great it was? Lion’s tourney was that kind of event. Much praise should be showered on Lord Cedric of Dorchester for the amazing pas d’armes that he organized… It was loads of fun, and I loved how it brought fighters and non-fighters together for the afternoon… Feast was also great, although I am quite biased, due to the fact that I had the great honor and privilege of escorting Her Majesty to feast, due to the fact that His Majesty was at another event in the southern reaches of our fair kingdom. (Event report ) Unfortunately, the site of Panhandle Skirmishes had another event booked at the same time. The weekend celebration of Earth Day, with lots of live bands and loud music. Since the site was not separated, there were a number of mundanes wandering through the encampment and watching the activities. Although this was suppose to be battles between Trimaris and Meridies, Meridies royalty canceled out due to a major event in Meridies. Therefore, it turned out to be a giant fighter practice along with a few Meridians who came. (Natasha)
reported by David Archer”Panhandles was great. LOTS of great fighting, some really good parties Saturday night, (Special thanks to Crimson Fist). Fighting wise we had 2 field battles, one resurrection, capture the flag battle, a Knights VS all battle, that got a bit confusing, and to finish it off we had 2 bridge
battles. The site was great though I could have skip the Earth Day music. I personally can’t wait to go again next year, it’s was well worth the trip from south west florida. I’d like to thank anyone out there that was a water bearer, you guys did a really great job. I surprised how many different people showed up to help cool off us fighters. You guys really are an importune part of fighting. I’d also like to thank Lady Cassandra and Golden Lion for handing out those snow cones, they were a godsend to us fighters.”

(Event report) There was a very laid back, fun and competitive Bardic competition in which seven talented gentles entered. Our Queen, Baroness Cathlin Emryss of Ibernia and The Baroness of Darkwater, THL Elizabeth Stafford Parr Pembroke were the judges. The competition was so
close there were 6 first place contestants and one winner. With the exception of a young lady who sprained her left vocal chord, all performed wonderfully at feast that evening. Lady Gwenna, a resident of Darkwater and a prominent member of “Black Rose”, was the winner of the competition. Reported by Cirocco
All who attended the games had lots of fun and laughs, although at times it got dangerous… one poor boyo nearly got cleaved in half by a flying frying pan. His Majesty called forward all the children in attendance and then gave all the children giant pixie sticks and thanked them for helping to make Clans so much fun. There was even an attempted assignation on HRM with his own water pistol! All in all, it turned out a fun day!. Let us not forget the food fight at feast!! His majesty caught every piece of bread thrown at him, what reflexes!!

Witness displays of skill and courage by the flower of Trimarian Chivalry as they compete in the “Baston Course” joust. The Ladies’ Gallery shall also choose the finest crest to receive an especial prize. The Fairemaster shall bestow a prize for the Best Heraldic Display. Autocrat Lady Gianetta di Remigio Welser. Feastcrat Baroness Laura de Botelesford.
Orson O’Donald won the crested helm lyst
(Event report)It was a FABULOUS event! An Crosaire has every reason to be very proud of its
most noble canton, Mathom Trove. I was delighted by the event (and the gang in Mathom Trove spoiled me rotten!) The Crested helm tourney was most enjoyable. There were over 20 contenders, and the creativity and artistry shown in the creation of the helms was most inspiring! Further, the chivalry and courtesy shown on the field was ideal. Throughout the day, the only negative was the incredible heat. Although Mathom Trove did everything they could to help the situation, including providing fans to the ladies, which was quite a nice touch! While I was unable to attend these particular activities, the event also boasted the Queen’s Yeoman tourney and the wedding of Earl Seosaidh and his good lady, Ysabeau. Anybody with further descriptions, please join in! Court was most interesting. Humorous highlights included, among other things, a most comfy seat at the feet of Her Majesty (ehem!), His Majesty’s amusement with written words, a talking Dolphin, and “Log.” And of course, court culminated with the elevation of Trimaris’ first Triple Peer, Earl Benen. His Excellency was elevated into the Order of the Pelican amidst much emotion and celebration. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen my Grampa Baron Taly ever so overcome with emotion. It was a very proud moment. Benen’s ceremony included kind words from all of the peerages, and the receival of a most beautiful cloak made by his lady-wife, Countess Rosabel. It was quite a historic moment, and one that I was most pleased to witness. Feast was most delicious and QUITE stuffing. I actually had to skip dessert, as I was most full (and that is QUITE a feat!) Mistress Laura kept up to her very typical high standards of excellence, and filled everyone’s belly. Later on in the evening, there was a general celebration in the hall for Earl Benen’s elevation and also in honor of Seosaidh’s and Ysabeau’s nuptials. Earl Benen was given a most beautiful glass-topped triangular wooden box with each of the peerage motifs carved on the sides and inscribed on the glass. The box held an INCREDIBLE triple-peerage medallion made by a combined effort of House Ac Dubh. If I am not mistaken, the design was provided by Countess Maisie, and the medallion was cast by Milady Toiree (I KNOW I’m spelling that wrong.) It is a most impressive piece of work. My report must end here, as I was quite tired from the event, and done in from the heat, and thus returned to my cabin for some rest. In summation, I am most grateful to the hosts of the event, and to the courtesy and chivalry extended all around. Fighters, the displays of heraldry were simply wonderful. I laud all of your efforts. Would that I were able to fight myself, I would count myself a very lucky man to be part of your fine company. Messer Giuseppe Francesco da Borgia, Seventh Barone, Barony of Wyvernwood.
Leather & Lace Wars
On 5-14/16-99 the Shire of Brineside Moor presents Leather and Lace Wars held at Camp Cricket. Events include archery (field, royal rounds, novelty shoot and IKAC), Heavy weapons lysts and rapier lyst, with a rapier field for FIVE HOURS! More fencing than you could shake a stick at! Planned are several Tavern Brawls, including a “Ladies Nite” lyst, “New Authorized fighters” lyst, “Olde Fighters” lyst, “Drunkards” lyst, and anything else the lyst master might dream up. There is a brewing display scheduled also. Scheduled classes are a C.P.R. re- certification class; Ariana Veneziano will teach a class on Rapier Armour or how to pass armor inspection and still look good; Dulcia Macpherson teaching The evolution of Elizabethan Costuming and a second class tips and techniques of Elizabethan costuming; Lady Catherine Abernathy teaching Basic mead Brewing; Mistress Ann of Hendon teaching The evolution of costuming early to late (or how your clothes change); Mistress Damara Narrissa on how to make your encampment look more period. Autocrat Thomas Skotkollr, Feastcrat Laird Ian MacBolotolph de Erroll
(event report by Autocrat, Thomas Skotkollr) the winners of the lysts and the leather and lace awards. Heavy weapons: Count Bo Kumoton he overwhelmingly took both lysts the round robin and the bear pit .prize a black enameled steel shield 19 x 36 light weapons : Three categories first two went to Lord Khalid prize: a white rapier shirt w/ lace, and a black leather reversible frog for lefties or righties! Third category goes to Porthos of Glymmerhold: prize a green buckler with a Leather and Lace symbol on it, by the way he seems to be collecting our rapier prizes, is any one else interested in maybe getting some of these? I am speaking directly to the dons here… Archery goes to Nail who came from behind in the point standings to over take trikeen on the last round, prize: a target with an arrow in the bulls eye and a archers tunic in black and red. The leather prize was awarded to a lady from Darkwater for the best early costume: Crisanthia De Grey The best Lace costume was won by a lady from our own shire as of this time she has no name her mundane name is Tammy Randall. We had eleven fighters show up for the day and we are very appreciative for them since the king had fighter practice with dark sword this past weekend and more than likely a lot of them were there. we had very few archers so the rounds were started late and they were short as no one brought there archery equipment nail and the list mistress allowed the contestants to use the same equipment (no one has an advantage that way) the rapier lysts were long and there were something like 8 fighters for this lyst as well I also assume there were many at the fighter practice rather that our event. The feast was beyond any other so far served no one was able to finish the dinner the roman feast was awesome !! and the baklava although made with walnuts was beyond excellence as well as the Spanish style pork and the beef sirloin tip roast. We can say that Laird Ian MacBoltoph De Erroll is in the same league as Lord Anon Nam Beanton, look for him to be doing it at martin mass , ohh are you gonna die for his food. Laird Ian will be Autocratting the event, so be there . we had four impromptu performers for our feast and I cant thank them enough Porthos told us a story and Khalid and his lady sang for us, as well as our own grace who performed a lovely piece for us first. And lastly I would love to thank all those who enjoyed my mead and light lagers after the feast. and perhaps I might begin brewing the chocolate mead for some special occasion next year, since people almost started a fight over it Saturday night(we only had one 12 oz bottle to spread around and the term liquid sex was used several times.)I have to say for those who wanted to attend this event and didn’t , I am truly sorry, however you may be able to taste some of those feast foods at the next assassins ball at the Myakka river state park on June 25th.
Battle of Uji
Talewinds, April AS XXXIII, 1999 On 5-21/23-99 join the Shire of the Ruins and House Takamatsu for the Battle of Uji at Camp Rotary. “The (in)famous Uji River Bridge Tourney. Melee team wood battle, and much more than can fit here. Autocrat Lord Arinaga Yoshiakira, Feastcrat Lord Predan Ackborne.
The Trimarian Cavalry
To the Good People of Trimaris do The Honorable Lady Brenna Caitlin MacGrioghair and Lady Aurora Danielle Trevelyan send humble greetings this day. So excited to see all this new found interest in the equestrian arts. To answer a few questions we thought we would post and let everyone know what we have been up to. The Trimarian Cavalry currently has about 33 authorized riders, 7 authorized equestrian marshals and 10 authorized ground crew members. We were able to travel with our horses to Gulf Pours where we had a splendid time slopping around in the mud with equestrians from the all over the Known World. Our beloved Duchess Elina and her lord, Duke Steven were even able to authorize as advanced members of the Trimarian Cavalry and Marshals at Large. His Majesty Tearlach enjoyed a gallop across Hastings field on our faithful mount Renwick’s Rogue. We have held two equestrian events this year with the help of the fine Shire of Glymmerholde and several practices. We are currently busy on plans to have around 10 horses at TMT. Their Majesties plan on riding into their Crown Tournament. We are planning several demos of the equestrian games and some great classes. Wyvernwood
The following letter was sent in response to the various questions, concerns and postings relative to the suspension of the Baron and Baroness of Wyvernwood, Messer Giuseppe Francesco da Borgia and H.L. Rowen MacBrighde. (Mka Joe and Rebecca Cook) by Their Majesties Tearlock and Cathlin.
This is, I am afraid, a very long post, as befits a very grave issue. My apologies for asking you to wade through it all, but there is no way to adequately respond to your concerns in a short missive.
While Cat and Tear are on the Throne, I feel that I shouldn’t have a privileged position just because I happen to be married to the Queen. I do have some knowledge of what’s going on, though, and will be happy to share my insights. You will understand that these remarks are my opinions, based on information I have picked up, NOT official information from the Crown.
I have learned that the Barony’s problems are of long standing, and are *much* more severe than I for one had ever imagined. I gather there is a considerable file of complaints in the Kingdom Seneschal’s records, beginning shortly after Joe and Becky’s elevation. There has been increasing dissatisfaction among the Barony’s Peers, many of whom feel they have been systematically denigrated and excluded from the life of the Barony by the incumbent Baron and Baroness. There have also been complaints that the Baron and Baroness have intentionally
made various people and households feel unwelcome in their home Barony.
Previous Crowns have been cognizant of the increasing tensions in Wyvernwoode, and have tried to get Joe and Becky to resolve them. For instance, Countess Nadira was sent to discuss the state of affairs with them last September. The Baron and Baroness basically stonewalled, denying that there were any problems, and making no attempt to defuse the
situation. Far from being a sudden occurrence, this crisis has been building for well over a year, and the Baronial couple has been fully aware of the increasing dissatisfaction of successive Crowns. Some of these problems spill over from the Game into the real world.
The King and Queen felt from the accumulated evidence in Kingdom files, information from previous Crowns, and complaints made directly to them, that the effectiveness of Giuseppe and Rowan as the Crown’s representatives was questionable. When they found out that the
Peers of Wyernwoode were holding a meeting to discuss the Barony’s problems, the Queen signified her intention to attend and obtain more information. To minimize potential damaging rumors and turmoil in the Barony, the Queen commanded the Peers to keep silent pending action by the Crown. After the meeting, the Queen called His Majesty. Following discussion, they agreed that the situation in Wyvernwoode was unacceptable.
The following night, the Queen requested that the Baron and Baroness meet with her. She suggested that they bring several peers of their own choice to advise them. By mutual agreement, Countess Nadira was selected as a neutral moderator. The Baron and Baroness continued to deny
there was any problem in Wyvernwoode, and claimed that they had never been notified of any complaints. The Queen informed them that this was unsatisfactory. To save the Barony from further division and bitterness, she offered them the option of resigning with honor and thus defusing a potentially damaging conflict. They did not accept this opportunity to end the unfortunate situation gracefully. Consequently, having stated the Crown’s cause as per Corpora, the Queen suspended them from the title and duties of Baron and Baroness.
A meeting of the Wyvernwoode populace was set to announce the suspension and request written opinions from the Barony’s people. Pending the meeting, the Queen instructed everyone involved to refrain from public comment. This Joe and Becky did not do. Rather, they fired off
missives to all and sundry, and did their best to mobilize a hostile reception for the Queen. They even broadcast the situation to Atlantia. I’ve been shown an e-mail from Baron Bran indicating that he and the Barony of Sacred Stone were in an uproar that the Trimarian Crown was
behaving so badly. Involving subjects of another Kingdom in an internal Trimarian affair is in my opinion both bad taste and a violation of fealty [by Kingdom Law, landed Barons *do* swear fealty]. The meeting of the Wyvernwoode populace was, from all accounts, a gathering as close to a lynch mob as could be rounded up on short notice. All that was missing were pitchforks and torches. The Queen, supported by HRH Prince Mittion, formally announced that the Baron and Baroness had been suspended. She then asked for letters from the citizens of Wyvernwoode
giving their honest evaluation of Joe and Becky’s performance, commenting on any problems they were aware of, and stating whether they thought Joe and Becky should remain Baron and Baroness. There was a great deal of shouting, abuse and downright invective from Joe and Becky’s supporters. This was not a memorable day for the vaunted chivalry, courtesie and civility of which the SCA is so proud. The disrespect, rudeness and vulgarity some Wyvernwoode “gentlefolk” bellowed, brayed and hooted at their Queen was unworthy of followers of “The Dream.” Now, much has been made of the “secrecy” of the “charges” against Joe and Becky. That I can address of my own knowledge. First of all, there *are* no “Charges”… this is not a trial. It is also not removal of an officer or banishment. This is the Crown deciding whether or not there is “just and stated cause” to do something about the people they’ve delegated their ceremonial presence in Wyvernwoode to. The Crown needs to get the populace’s input before deciding on appropriate action. But Corpora, Kingdom Law and the Society Seneschal all three say that the status of a landed Baron depends solely on the Crown’s judgement.
The Crown has throughout this sordid affair been painstakingly careful to follow not only the letter but the spirit of Corpora and Kingdom Law. The King and Queen have consulted the Society’s Seneschal every step of the way. The Crown’s reading of Corpora and conversations with the Society Seneschal led them to decide that to avoid any appearance of slander or
defamation, detailed complaints and other documentation should not be made public. So they’ve explained the complaints and their views to the individuals involved, but not publicized them beyond those who have the need and the right to know. This is in line with the “Channels for
Complaint and Appeal” guidelines in the “SCA Organizational Handbook.”
Despite what may be thought, a landed Baron does *not* rule his Barony. He is not an officer. He cannot appoint or dismiss the Barony’s officers, nor does he have any authority over them. He is not legally responsible to the populace, and does not officially represent them. By Corpora and Kingdom Law, he is the Crown’s ceremonial representative in the Barony. That’s
all. Corpora spells it right out: C.VI.B.2.a: “The basic duties of the Baron and/or Baroness are ceremonial in nature in reflecting the royal presence in the barony. The Crown may assign additional duties and responsibilities, according to the laws and customs of the kingdom.”
It is not possible for a person who lacks the Crown’s confidence to effectively represent that Crown. In this case, it is obvious that the present Baron/Baroness *do not* effectively represent the Crown. If they did, we wouldn’t be dealing with this. Evidence is strong that they have instead seen the Barony as their own small kingdom, held by their own right rather than in trust. It looks to me like they have used their position to build a personal power-base rather than acting as vicars for the Crown. It also looks to me that they have badly overestimated the
“power” of their position without due regard to Corpora.
All of that aside, their actions during and since their meeting with the Queen would alone be sufficient for dismissal. Instead of trying to deal with the situation quietly and cause as little damage to the Barony and Kingdom as possible, they have intentionally “cried havoc and
let loose the dogs of war” against the Crown.
Particularly reckless was attempting to mobilize a Barony in *another Kingdom* against their own Crown! What does Atlantia have to do with the internal affairs of Trimaris? How does *that* serve our Realm? To maintain their own position, they have split their Barony with useless
recrimination, broken their pledged fealty to the Crown, and spread conflict throughout the Kingdom and beyond. Looks to me like their only concern is to retain their own status at all costs regardless of the Realm’s welfare. Hate to have to say that. Joe was my baronial “grandson,”
and I’ve always thought highly of him. But there it is.
Whatever the situation was before, it’s painfully obvious that Joe and Becky have not been, are not now and *cannot* in the future be the Crown’s presence in Wyvernwoode. The suspension is fully justified by Corpora, Kingdom Law and the facts in the case.
One final note: I must say I admire more than I can tell the grace, self-control and courage with which my Beloved Spouse has met the adversities of this past week. She’s been yelled at, cursed at, insulted and vilified, and come through it all as a true Queen. Elizabeth would be proud! As am I. In service to the Realm, Sir Erich M. F. W. von Rabenskalt und von Kampf,

A Summer Revel
On 7-23/25-99 the Shire of Nan Crioch Tuatha presents A Summer Revel.
Since there was no official court business, no awards given, no announcements, I am forwarding this well written, concise report of the schitck that was court. Haakon
Greetings unto the fair and noble Gentles of Trimaris!
The foul miscreant at A Summer Thang has been found! With the help of the good, law abiding Gentles that attended the event, seven possible evil doers were called before TRM at court for trial. Among the accused miscreants were…
Earl Syr Brendan… accused of deserting Trimaris in it’s darkest hour, and intriguing the fairer sex of our kingdom. < Vindicated… proven that he in fact did not desert, but was sent on a scouting mission/ his accusers also could not prove that intriguing the fairer sex was criminal>
Orson O’Donnald… accused of not sharing his air-conditioned hut.
Saoirse Eilit Ni Floinn (Doe)… accused of starting a food fight with HRM Tearlach at a feast…
Morgan the Pict… accused of stirring up a ruckus and acting like a child… <vindicated, on=”” account=”” of=”” hormonal=”” imbalance=”” due=”” to=”” pregnancy=””>
Cahir Na Coille Moire… accused of taking advantage of our kingdom’s fair ladies while they may not be in their cups, and public intoxication without sharing…
Lady Brenna Jerra… accused of being far too beauteous, and for laughing at a gentle, not once, but twice!
HRM Tearlach… accused of the wetting of many good Gentles and innocent children, fidgeting during court, skinning and leaving nekkid a gentle’s pet cow, the wearing of obscene cow printed shorts :::wonders where they came from::: and worst of all… for not taking the fair lady Loki to the soiree….< Found grossly guilty of all charges and more!>
Yes! Tis true! Our foul miscreant was in fact our own King! And to his honor, he stood for his stoning with much bravery. His loyal guards Olaf and Hakkon ::::knows she can’t spell…::: as well as the brave and chivalrous Earl Syr Brendan stood as a wall to protect the King from the onslaught. The stoning was fantastically horrible! Water stones sailed through the air with incredible speed and number, the Kings protectors where covered in water! Their drippings soak the ground! Oh! The humanity! Anyway… although the King’s men tried valiantly, some water stones did in fact slip through their walls to pelt the King, but being the warrior he is… he made due with what he could find to pelt the stoners back! In the end, the King was saved by his brave and loyal men, and having taken his punishment… HRM Tearlach was then forgiven, and our faire kingdom was once again considered a decent place to live!
At this time, The Shire of Peregrine Springs would like to thank all the wonderful gentles who helped us flush out our miscreant, The accused who good naturedly stood their trials, HRM Cat for being incredible in her judgements of our miscreants, and above all… HRM Tearlach for taking his punishment like the honorable man that he is! If not for all these people, our stoning would not have been as grand as it turned out to be!
VIVAT TRIMARIS! In service to the Kingdom and the Dream. Saoirse Eilit Ni Floinn</vindicated,>

AS XXXII and AS XXXIII
From Talewinds, January AS XXXII
From Stromek and Alianore, King and Queen of Trimaris Unto the People of Trimaris:
Hear Us now, good people, for We do crave a boon of Our cantons, shires and baronies. As Gulf Wars approaches, but some 2 months away, help is now needed to cull the gifts that will be given to the Crowns and Coronets of the kingdoms represented at that war. Good people, last year gift baskets were created for 13 crowns-in-attendance, and even with so many wonderful items donated for this cause, we were still a bit hard pressed. We therefore ask the many talented people of Our Kingdom to begin now to create gifts, gifts that will represent the many talents and artistic skills of our Kingdom. So as not to place an undue burden on one or two individuals, We ask that each group “adopt-a-kingdom.” Mastyeritsa Ekaterina Adrianovna (with help from her dear Sir Demetrius) has kindly offered to coordinate this project.
At this time also, Casa di Rienzi has graciously offered to construct boxes, painted with colors/arms of the various kingdoms, into which the gifts may go. Additionally, Ld. Wilfred is crafting small wooden boxes as gifts and the Barony of Darkwater and the Order of the White Scarf (yes, orders and peerages may also “adopt-a-kingdom”) have already chosen their kingdom to sponsor.
Proposed Changes to Trimaris Kingdom Law
Their Royal Majesties, Stromek and Alianore propose the following changes to Trimaris Kingdom Law. The populace is invited to submit comments regardign the proposed changes in writing for eight weeks from the publication date of this Talewinds:
Part X Section B (page10 in the 1995 printing of the laws) is to read:
“Territorial Barons and Baronesses may establish a maximum of three (3) non- armigerous awards which shall be specific to their Barony, one of which pertains to the Martial Arts (including heavy weapons, light weapons, archery and live weapons.”
Part XIII Section E. Ordered Grants – (page 11 in the 1995 printing of the laws) is to read:
“Ordered Grants – these awards may carry a Grant of Arms at the Crown’s discretion”
Part XIII Section G. Kingdom Armigerous Awards – (page 12 in the 1995 printing of the laws) is to read:
“Kingdom Armigerous Awards – these awards may carry an Award of Arms at the Crown’s discetion.”
The last two paragraphs are meant to clarify the concept that it is Royal Prerogative that adds the GoA or AoA to a Kingdom award, that it is not an automatic “given.”
The Order of the Sea Urchin will be reopened.

Each round of the “best 2 out of 3” finals was a different style of the Bardic Arts, with Master Rurik issuing challenges to Angus. The third round featured each competitor leading the populace in a song near and dear to the hearts of all Trimarians. Audience participation levels were considered in the scoring by the judges. The finals were extremely close, but the judges elected as follows:
Grand Champion – Angus Armstrong
Runner-up – Master Rurik
I would like to thank all those that donated prizes: Alex, the Huntingtons, Master Rurik and Mistress Cerdiwen. Also thanks be passed along to the good gentles who assisted with the judging. I was extremely grateful to Gregor, for assisting me throughout a rather busy day.

From the Minister of Arts and Sciences, Messer Giuseppe da Borgia
“…Speaking of documentation, I have another subject to address. After this past Winter Art-Sci, it was called to my attention that a number of entrants have begun to make use of the internet for researching historical information. While the internet itself is a wonderful research tool, I would like to remind all entrants that it is the duty and responsibility of the entrant to provide AT LEAST one primary or AT LEAST two secondary sources of documentation per entry. In other words, if one is to use a print-out from the internet for documentation, please be sure to help the judges by providing actual documentation sources. Simply printing out pages of info. from the world wide web and including them with your entry isn’t enough….”

Seneschal’s 1st quarter report from Lord Andre Jean Faucon, Kingdom Seneschal of Trimaris to Her Excellency Ellis O’Boirne
Shire of Amurgorod: (sustaining 17, Associate 6) The last report was received 1-15-98. I have not yet been informed of the promised change in Seneschal for this group. I await to hear further developments.
Barony of An Crosaire: (Sustaining 56, Associate 19) The Barony holds four meetings per month with an average attendance of forty. Classes in Morris Dancing, Dance, Newcomer, Converting Costuming Patterns, Bardic and Basic Heraldry were offered. Demos were held at Westwood Middle School for 30+ students. Topics included period food and everyday life. The local Barnes and Nobles was the site for a live display of period artisans at work. Finally the group participated once again in the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire. This event draws 30, 000+ people and has been a keystone demonstration for the group. In fact, the Barony does this so well, I have referred other groups to them, so that their presentation methods can be shared with and used by all. The Baronial succession has been decided. Once again this group should be complimented on the lack of politics involved with this process. The group didn’t even slow down and is in the midst of preparing for hosting our Trimaris Memorial Crown Tourney.
The Barony is about to bring into existence a new incipient canton located in Dixie County Florida. I anticipate no problems with this formation. My deputy for incipient groups will be hard at work helping both of our incipient groups strive to become successful.
Shire of Brineside Moor: (sustaining 21, associate 7) This quiet group has little activity to report for this quarter. I have noticed some of the group’s member names appearing in individual bids for events. A good sign of a group still keeping active and busy.
Shire of Castlemere: (sustaining 55, associate 24) Castlemere hosted the Kingdom’s Spring Coronation event. They seemed to be giving most of their attention to this and it showed. The event went off with few problems and all who attended had a good time. I expect to hear more about classes, etc. now that they have finished with the event. I expect to hear more about their normal operations again.
Incipient Shire of Chiens Frontiere: (sustaining 2, associate 3) The seneschal reports that the group is holding two meetings per month with an average attendance of six. The group is busy planning demos and other activities designed to help them reach potential new members.
Shire of Crystal Moor: (sustaining 3, associate 3) Crystal Moor has a new seneschal and is now holding weekly meetings. Attendance runs around 12 people. The group’s seneschal included photocopies of proof of membership for three new members. I am glad to see the membership increase go along with the increase in activity. A day event is in the planning stages.
Barony of Darkwater: (sustaining 86, associate 29) The Barony is as busy as usual. Thegroup holds weekly meetings with an average attendance of 40 people. The group has now changed their meeting location to the Union Park Middle School. The seneschal feels that this will allow them to be more active in the school system. Classes in Dance, Calligraphy, Art/Sci documentation, and newcomers were held. The group is currently preparing for their Gathering of the Clans event.
Shire of Fiach Ogan: (sustaining 19, associate 7) This group holds two meetings per month with an average attendance of 20 people. Weekly practices for rapier and heavy weapons combat are featured by this group.
Shire of Gleann Dubh: (sustaining 17, associate 6) The seneschal reports that the group hold two meetings per month with an average of 8 in attendance. Classes in armor making and tabard sewing were offered this quarter. Class attendance averaged 4 people. A weekly fighter paractice is held and attended by 6-8 people. A demo was held at the New Smyrna Beach Library. Approximately 80 parents and children watched demonstrations of period crafts and heavy weapons combat.
Shire of Glymmerholde: (sustaining 30, associate 5) Glymmerholde hosts 6 meetings per month with attendance averaging 25 people. Classes in Customs and Courtesies, Class Teaching and a fighter workshop were offered. The seneschal reports problems with integrating new fighters into the group. Rather than just complain, the group’s seneschal is giving of her time and attending fighter workshops. I applaud her initiative in placing herself in close contact with the fighters of her group. I will be interested in hearing about the results.
College of Golden Keype: (numbers included in Kingdom unaffiliated) The last report received from this group was 1/98. No other information is available.
Canton of Mathom Trove: (sustaining 6, associate 2) The Canton meets on average three times per month with an average attendance of 14 people. Most of the Canton’s efforts were geared for preparing for their annual St. Georges’ event. This is the premier heraldic event in the Kingdom. The group’s attention to detail is always appreciated by all who attend. The only other notes is that the Canton will soon have to be looking for a new seneschal. The current officer was selected to be the next Baroness so this is indeed a happy occasion.
Shire of Narval Dorado: (sustaining 37, associate 20) Narval holds two meetings per month with an average attendance of 10 people. The group is currently helping the Shire of Storm with the demo at the Largo Renaissance Festival. The group is now planning a mid-summer event as well.
College of Northern Marches: (sustaining 4, associate 3) This group has had an activity level that belays their size. First they performed outstanding service by running gate at Spring Coronation. The Kingdom Constable has reported that their efforts have earned them the highest praise from her office. Now I am again seeing the names of group members appear on bids for Kingdom events. Rather than waiting for service opportunities this groups members are actively seeking them. Someone is certainly doing something right there and I applaud their effort.
Shire of Oldenfeld:(sustaining 19, associate 10) Oldenfeld holds weekly meetings with attendance running about 20 people. Music, Sewing, Fending and Combat Archery classes were held. The group participated in the local parade of lights and assisted a Meridian group for a “Tartan Days” demo. The group’s Yule and Anniversary events were well received. The main focus of this group is moving to preparing for Panhandle Skirmishes. This is an interkingdom war with Mericies. The shire is energetic and is up for the task. One interesting project started by the seneschal concerns demo participation. Points are being awarded to those member attending and when enought our accumulated a free local event will be awarded. I will be interested in hearing how this promotion works for the group.
Shire of Peregrine Springs: (sustaining 22, associate 11) Three meetings are held per month. Attendance averages 5 people per meeting. A twice monthly fighter practice is featured. The group also hosted a rapier symposium this quarter.
Shire of Ruins: (sustaining 23, associate 7) The group is planning a revel for its members. Also the seneschal is looking for ways to raise funds with an eye toward future activity for the group. Nothing else was reported.
Shire of Sangre del Sol: (sustaining 19, associate 5) Sangre holds one meeting per month with an average attendance of 15 people. Classes in Art/Sci Documentation, Dance and Sewing were offered. This group seems to have a very active sewing group that meets often. The group held an Anniversary Event that was rated a success. In addition, this group also assisted with gate at the Winter Art/Sci event. The Kingdom Constable praised this group’s gate efforts in her report. The only other news concerns the impending change over in the seneschal office. I would like to express my gratitude to Lady Sancia for her fine work.
Shire of Sea March: (sustaining 25, associate 13) This group holds two meetings per month with an average attendance of 8 people. The seneschal seems to be working toward better communications with her local officers. She has been looling through the files and requesting copies of reports from her local officers. An April Revel was held for a group activity. The seneschal has indicated that they want several dates reserved for 1999 for events. As of yet I have not received an official date request and will talk to all of my locals about the proper procedures for reserving dates.
Shire of Southkeep: (sustaining 18, associate 9) Southkeep has a new seneschal at the helm. I await to hear more bout what this fine group is doing in there next report.
Shire of Stag Ridge: (sustaining 7, associate 2) This small groups has been busy holding demos. They were part of the Sarasota Highlands Games and presented an extensive display of period arts and crafts. Next a demo for Lake County Elementary School was held. The 4th grade class was treated to two visits. The first visit covered life in the middle ages. The second visit focused on specific topics such as calligraphy. Finally the current seneschal will be stepping down soon. I would commend her for her work on getting and keeping this fine shire going.
Shire of Starhaven: (sustaining 48, associate 29) This large shire was surprising quiet for the quarter. I look forward tohearing more about their upcoming activities.
Shire of Storm: (sustaining 22, associate 9) The last report for this group was received 1/98. I know for a fact that this group is holding a four weekend long demo at the Largo Ren Faire. I am personally aware of an active fighter practice that takes place weekly.
Canton of Swamp Keype: (sustaining 13, associate 6) Swamp Keype holds one meeting per month with an average attendance of 20 people. The group hosted 3 demos this quarter. The first was a large public demo in front of Orlando City Hall. This was done for the local motion picture industry. The four gentles involved received awards of appreciation for their involvement. The second demo was the Milton High School senior English Class. Various period topics and crafts were presented. The final demo was held for the Hickory Tree School. This demo featured SCA heavy weapons combat. The seneschal reports that a new art/sci officer is in place and seems to be settling in just fine.
Shire of Tri O’s: (sustaining 12, associate 12) This group holds two meetings per month with an average attendance of 8 people. Their small size doesn’t keep this group from working hard. The shire helped present a very successful Kingdom fundraising event called Scotch Welsh Wars. This fighting event was very well received by the populace.
Shire of Vaca del Mar: (sustaining 23, associate 14) Vaca holds one meeting per month with an average attendance of 6 people. The group has gone through some recent upheavals with many officers changing. The new seneschal seems intent on handling problems on the local level and getting the group back on track. Three demos were held this quarter. The first was for Palm Coast Middle School. The second demo was held at St. Barnabus Episcopal School for about 400 students. The final demo was a public demonstration of fighting and crafts at the Deland Arts Fair.
Barony of Wyvernwood: (sustaining 94, associate 31) The first Barony of Trimaris was as active as ever. Four meetings are held each month with an average attendance of 40 people. Classes in Heraldry, Period Music, and war strategy was held. Four demos were held this quarter. The first involved answering phones for the local PBS fundraiser. The next demo involved working the crowd at the USF College of Engineers “Blarney Dinner.” Cub Scout Pack 222 were treated to an Art/Sci demo were interactive stations were set up for participation. Finally the group helped out at the Bay Area Ren Faire. To keep busy the group also hosted one local event and is preparing to host the next Kingdom Art/Sci event as well.
Waterford Elementary School Demo
5-19-98, the Barony of Darkwater held a demo at the Waterford Elementary School 5th grade class. Sir Demetrius, Lord Wilhelm Borsbane and Lord Thorgierr Inn Danski put on a mini tournament. They each chose a lady to fight for and a quire to help them with their armor. Afterwards we played with a trebuchet (a small one built especially for demos) as the kids tried to knock down some castle walls. Wilhelm and I (Lady Teamhair) sang at their “feast” and then we all spent the last hour signing autographs for the children in their yearbooks. It was a great success! I would like to thank all those who helped (thank’s went to Seamus for the use of his mini-trebuchet), and a special thank you to the Waterford PTA for the generous donation. Lady Teamhair Gwyddel
Trimaris Memorial Tourney
Talewinds April AS XXXII 5/22-25/98 The Barony of An Crosaire proudly presents Trimaris Memorial Tourney, held at Camp Wewa. “Join us as the entire Kingdom holds it’s breath in anticipation of the results of Crown Lysts, wherein the Heirs to the Thornes shall be determined by Right of Arms! There will also be the Champion of Trimaris Lysts, Rapier Lysts, Archery Competition, Poet Laureate Competition, Children’s Activities, and much, much more! Autocrats, Master Rurik Petrovitch Stoianov & Lady Marte Grau called Kratze; Feastcrat, Mistress Ceridwen o’ Cahercommaun
Poet Laureat = Wulfinde Aethelwulf
(event report) We had some grave concerns regarding the alcohol policy of Camp Wewa. I am pleased to report that there were “no” incidents at the event regarding this issue. The people of Trimaris are to be highly commended for their understanding and cooperation of this matter. Over all, the event seemed to be a tremendous success. There were 1,232 persons in attendance throughout the course of the weekend. There were three heavy weapon’s lysts, Crown Lyst and an Unbelted Fighters Lyst on Saturday, and the Champion of Trimaris Lyst on Sunday. There was archery from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm on both days, as well as a light weapon’s lyst on Sunday. There were eight art/sci classes held, children’s activities run by the Minister of Children, as well as Page’s activities run by Donavyn de Raine, Page’s Guild Master. We were also able to open the pool for swimming from noon to 4:00 pm each day. Feast for the weekend was a huge success. We were able to provide eight meals throughout the weekend for those Gentles who purchased feast, as well as 24 hour liquid refreshment (ice tea, lemonade and ice water) for everyone attending the event. The quality of the food presented was of high caliber. I am not aware of any complaints regarding food…not even “there wasn’t enough.” Everyone seemed well pleased with what they received.
The Barony of An Crosaire, once again, provided an ice and soda booth for the benefit of the event. This has proven to be invaluable for the large events for many reasons. It reduces the need to travel off site thus reducing the parking and traffic problems, as well as providing a means for event goers to conveniently keep their personal coolers supplied with ice, thus reducing the number of requests in the kitchen for ice from the camp’s ice machine.
Financially, I believe the event was a tremendous success. THL Cara will have to make the complete report on this matter, since I do not have all the information regarding this issue. However, both myself and Mistress Ceridwen were able to come in under budget. This combined with the extraordinary attendance should prove to be a very successful combination. Just as a reminder to yourself and THL Cara, the extra 5% profit above the standard 30% which the Barony of An Crosaire was to receive, is to go into the Land Fund by unanimous decision of the Barony. (Submitted by Master Rurik Petrovitch Stoianov, Autocrat)
The Incipient Shire of Murvagh
The official starting date of the Incipient Shire of Murvagh is 5-98, with the founding seneschal Katherine McKinney. Murvagh is located in Cross City, FL. The shire was started by people who became interested in the SCA through the Hoggetowne Medieval Fair. According to the 1st quarter report, the seneschal states “Since the average age of our members is around 17, it is not surprising, but very difficult for the two or three members who end up doing all of the work, planning activities, and doing all of the “how are you (getting to, paying for, getting your waiver signed for, fixed for garb, etc) the up coming event” planning. Since the huge majority of our current members are teenagers, meeting have, quite expectedly, turned in to something of a social club for “geeks”. Due to the largely “redneck” and rural nature of our area, this is not necessarily a bad thing and gives them a needed outlet. This is one of the problems that time will cure. It has been a quite quarter. We did manage, after great difficulty to obtain a new meeting place, the DAV hall, that is much better than our old one. Our membership has stablized to ten or so core members, augmented with occasional visitors.
Summer Thunder
6-6-98, The Barony of Darkwater held their Summer Thunder event at Camp River Forest
Panhandle Skirmishes
Talewinds June AS XXXIII 6-12/14-98, The Shire of Oldenfeld is proud to present Panhandle Skirmishes, to be held at the Spirit of the Suwanee Music Camp. “This year, Oldenfeld is proud to host Panhandle Skirmishes for both Trimaris and Meridies as a kingdom event. We’ve got battles galore, arts and sciences activities, and many more activities planned with that special Oldenfeld touch that everyone has come to know and love.” Autocrat, Lord Cedric of Dorchester
(report from Panhandle participant) OK, I’ve resisted replying to this simply because the pain and anguish have been bad. I mean, I go to a war for the first time in about 10 years and what happens…I sprain my ankle in the warm up time before the battles even start!!!! If it hadn’t been for the Torchlight Tourney the night before, I’d have been *really* pissed off!!! Other than this minor (major for me…has cost about $500 between the loss of work, the doctor, and the event cost {gee…this was even local for me}) set back, the war was a wonderful and was a great success. Everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoy themselves immensely. Like others, I heard no complaints about the fighting other than the heat. The site was very nice except for the lack of adequate shower and toilet facilities. Rurik
Talewinds August AS XXXIII While the vast armies of Trimaris and Meridies engaged in a day of spirited Martial Combat, the musicians of both kingdoms engaged in a different sort of exchange. Sitting inside the art/sci hall, amidst a dazzling display of crafts, several musicians spent the day singing and playing the songs of the Renaissance. Sylvija, Romas, Alexander, Beverly, Wilhelm F., Warina of Meridies, Arianna (at her first event) all joined together for a wonderful day of making music. The day started off with some dance tunes and other familiar instrumental songs. This was followed by an hour or so of period vocal music. Many of the minstrels sang as well as played musical instruments. A wide variety of music was played that made it possible for all, from newcomers to advance players, to take part. After a spirited 3 ½ hour sessions, it was time to take a break. Following a brief intermission, the recorder players gathered together to work on some advanced materials. It is extremely gratifying to get the opportunity to sit together with a group of dedicated minstrels to play music composed by some of the most prominent of the Renaissance composers. I hope that these kind of advanced sessions will take place at every event. During the day, the Black Rose Consort played music at the Great Court. Also, at feast which was given for all the assembled Royalty, Cirocco performed her newest hit “Ode to a Newcomer.” Martha sang two ballads that brought tears both of pride and laughter. Despite the heat, a good time was had by all.
Cattle Raids
Talewinds June AS XXXIII 6-20-98, The Shire of Starhaven once again presents Cattleraids, ar F. Burton Smith Park, “Featuring the cattle raids, a five man melee team tourney. There will also be a Champion of Starhaven Lyst. Cattle raids is a day trip only event, starting at 11 am and ending at 6 pm. A soldiers feast will be held in the evening. We are sponcering a food drive for the local Humane Society, so please bring a can or box of animal food.” Autocrats, Lord Conradin der Grau & Lady Josephine of Devon.
St. Jerome’s Study
Talewinds June AS XXXIII, Saturday, 6-27-98, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Focusing on classes by Peers and their associates. We invite you to learn Arts & Sciences and Martial Arts. A Pas d’Arms, requested by His Majesty, will be held during the cool morning hours. A judging for Summer Art/Sci’s brewing and vinting contest will be held at this event. A sumptuous, authentic 14th century feast will be served starting with breakfast and including lunch, then feast supper.” Autocrat, Master Iefan Colledig; Feastcrat, Mistress Ceridwen o’Cahercommaun & Master Rurik Petrovitch Stoianov
(event report) It is my understanding that approximately 190 people attended the event and (at the first rendering of the funds) the event netted somewhere in the range of $640.00 for the land fund. I fully believe that the event was a major success. Thanks in large part to a diligent staff there were no problems encountered during the event. The Pas D’Armes went well, the fighters enjoyed themselves, and the ladies had a grand time in the gallery. Numerous volunteers made sure that water was available for the fighters and thanks were expressed by many of the fighters for the accommodations provided. The classes all went well. There were only two teachers who had to cancel. One of these was involved in a car accident on the way to the event and the other was keeping watch on her home in light of the numerous wild-fires that were apparently in the vicinity. Only one teacher present canceled a class for lack of participation. This was during the first hour of classes for the day (9:30 am) and attendance early in the day was low. As the day progressed all of the classes were full and “many” people (students and teachers) enthusiastically endorsed the event and the site choice. The all-day feast was incredible! Many complements were expressed to me for the quality of the food and the availability of a filling and substantial (not sandwiches) lunch! The evening meal was delicious and the entire evening feast was prepared, presented, and served well. The Crown (Their Majesties) whole-heartily endorsed the event as something they hoped would become a yearly occurrence. Site clean-up proceeded well. Although, I think I should have helped more in the kitchen but each time I went in I felt like I was just causing folks to trip. Overall, it was wonderful. I am looking forward to attending next year’s event and teaching (I think Messer Guiseppe plans to autocrat the event). Master Iefan Colledig ap Dynfwal Abertawe, O.L.
Talewinds, August AS XXXIII, 1998 This first time event was a smash success. Members of the populace from all over our great Kingdom gathered in the lovely Abbey to devote a day to their continuing studies. Indeed, the full spectrum of the Arts and Sciences of the SCA were explored in a large number of well attended classes, taught by some of the most learned Scholars from the ranks of Peers and their Associates. After beginning the day with a sumptuous breakfast prepared by Master Rurik, Mistress Ceridwen and Baroness Natasha; everyone was ready to go to school. Many of the minstrels who are frequently mentioned in these Guild articles, attended both of the excellent music classes that were offered. The first class was on how to prepare documentation for Art/Sci entries. While the next hour was used to explore the rich body of literature available from the Royal printers on the subject of renaissance music. We wish to express our gratitude to the great Lady who presented these classes. In addition, there were classes on other areas of the Bardic and Performing Arts. These classes were also presented by recognized experts and scholars, to student eager to learn. Of course, no event would be compete without some time for the minstrels to gather to share some newly acquired music. Although, the time for playing was brief, the minstrels made the best of it by playing a wide selection of music. Later that night at a feast fit for a King and Queen, the populace was delighted to hear some beautiful music from members of the Oldenfeld Ensemble. Beverly sang a beautiful love song that brought tears to our eyes and warmth to our hearts. She has such a lovely voice, that it is difficult to find the right words to adequately describe its delicate sound and robust power. Mistress Sylvija, then sang an Italian love song about a girl passing along some figs to her suitors. Master Iefan brought down the house with his antics when he was given the honor of receiving a fig.

Pennsic XXVII
Talewinds April AS XXXII 8-7/16-98, War looms in the north and the call goes forth for warriors. Glory and Honor will be won. Let them tremble in fear at our warriors! Let them be humbled by our artisans! Come one, come all Pennsic XXVII awaits.
This came over the internet shortly after the war. Although this does not involve Trimaris, it is a story so typical of the wonderful things that happen at our wars I felt that it would be appropriate to include in our history for the benefit of those who follow us. Natasha
The mercenary household of the Mountain Confederation had been fighting for the Kingdom of Ansteorra all war, and doing a damned good job of it, too. On the final Saturday of the war, Barn, the King of Ansteorra, came to the Mountain Confederation as we assembled for the first battle, and spoke. He congratulated us on our fighting, on our ability to work with his army, and gave our fighting unit the Sable Falcon, the highest fighting award in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. He shook each of us by the hand, and personally thanked each one of us for our efforts on his kingdom’s behalf. We cheered him, and his kingdom, and we adorned our standard with Ansteorra’s Falcon. Barn regretted that he could not remain at Pennsic to lead his forces into battle. In fact, nearly the entire Ansteorran army was in their camp, packing to begin their 2000 mile drive back to their kingdom. There were only a handful of Ansteorrans who were going to take the field that final morning, and Barn wondered if we would allow them to fight with us under our unit command. We explained that we would be honored to have it so. Barn’s final words to us were “Take care of my boys…” We cheered him again, as he strode from the field. The mountain pass battle began, and the combined forces of Ansteorra and the Mountain Confederation fought hard, well and honorably. After the mountain pass, as we were resting for the coming field battle, we saw there was a great gathering of Eastern forces in the resurrection area of the battlefield. A few of our fighters joined the throng, and came back with the news that the Eastern Army planned to withdraw from the field. At first we did not believe that this could be true. But as we watched, the entire Eastern Army formed a column behind the Eastern banners and marched from the field. Our Ansteorran comrades grew dismayed, and cried “We did not drive 2000 miles to quit a battle!” Our unit commander, Thorvaaldr, exclaimed: “I promised your king I would take care of you, and taking care of you does NOT include walking away from a fight. Don your armor!” And so we did. By my count, there were 24 warriors of the Mountain Confederation, 7 warriors from Ansteorra, and 3 Atlantian warriors who arrayed ourselves in our battle gear, and strode to the highest point of the battlefield. Over our heads waved the blue and gold banner of the Mountain Confederation, adorned by the Ansteorran Sable Falcon. We paused atop the hill and gazed at the might of the Midrealm army. It stretched from one side of the field to the other. Then the 34 of us marched across the battle plain, to challenge the Midrealm army. Thorvaaldr, as our unit commander, spoke for us. He cried: “We are the combined forces of the Kingdom of Ansteorra and the Mountain Confederation. We came here to fight a battle, and a battle we shall have. We will leave this field only in Victory or in Death. Gentlemen, assemble your army!”And the cheers erupted. They began with the Midrealm fighters who had actually heard the challenge, and spread along both flanks as word went out that a handful of fighters had stayed on the field. The cheers became a roar as we were engulfed by our “foes”. Backs were pounded, hands shaken, we were lifted and hugged and swung around by a hundred fighters each. When the accolade ended, we 34 fighters marched back to our little hill, ready to be the last “Forlorn Hope” of the blue taped army. But as we stood there, beneath our standard bearing the golden snarling mountain lion and the blue hills we call home, a single warrior approached from the other side. He came before us and cried: “You have shown great honor and >glory by your actions this day. Please allow me to fight at your side.” And we replied: “We would be honored to have you, and welcome. Bring this man blue tape!” And lo, as this was being done, two more fighters approached, asking to fight with us. And then four more fighters, and then a unit, and then another unit asked to join us. And then, the Kingdom of Calontir approached us and said: “Please allow us the honor of fighting at your side!” And to all who approached, we cried: “Thank you, the honor is ours! Welcome! More blue tape!” A grizzled knight of Calontir walked through our ranks, shaking our hands. He was an obvious veteran of many wars, but tears flowed freely from his eyes, as he shook our hands and told us how proud he was to belong to a Society who valued honor and chivalry so highly. “War points do not matter, this isn’t about war points,” he said, “it is about honor and chivalry. You have truly won this War.” Once again, we turned to face the Midrealm from our little hill. But now, beneath the banner of the Mountain Confederation, there stood an army that reached halfway across the battlefield. On the other side, the army of the Midrealm also covered only half the field. They had released their allies from their Pennsic XXVII war alliances, and allowed the marshals to even the sides. The Midrealm had the final war point in their gauntlets, they could have crushed our Forlorn Hope with a couple of small units. But they had chosen instead the route of chivalry, honor, generosity and graciousness. The marshals finished briefing us, the assembled and newly assembled armies awaited breathlessly. And with the roar of the cannon, the final official war point battle of Pennsic XXVII began. It was glorious, it was honorable and clean. It was some of the best fighting of the war. When it was over, the blue taped side was victorious. Barn, the King of Ansteorra, was still on site to hear the news that his kingdom had won the final war point of Pennsic XXVII. As Ansteorra was still in alliance with the Eastern forces, Barn sent an envoy to HRM Timothy with the gift of the final war point. HRM Timothy graciously accepted. The words I write are true. This saga is the story of a small band of warriors who stood alone as a Forlorn Hope against an army, and won. “Honor, not Honors” is the Mountain Confederation motto. Our colors are blue and gold. Our colors do not run. This posting is not meant in any way to impugn the honor or question the reasons of HRM Timothy or the Eastern Army. It was just too good a tale to not be told. Arden MacIlhatton, Warrior of the Mountain Confederation

Domesday Report – Murvagh
This was a busy year for us. We started from scratch and accomplished lots of things. We became an official incipient group, we submitted our name to the College of Heralds, we’re working on a preliminary draft of our device and we’re up to eight paid members. We’ve grown from about ten active members to almost twenty. In a county where the only high school’s graduating class is always less than 100. We’ve attended several events as a group, and have become socially much more cohesive. We’ve learned new skills. We have several mailers, a fledgling bard, a few aspiring warriors, a brewer, and a weaver. Next year we’re going to focus on membership, learning new medieval skills and perhaps hosting our own small event. – Katherine McKinney, Seneschal

AS XXX – AS XXXI
Talewinds, January A.S. XXX, 1996 From the Journal Ibn Fadlan (translated by Master Gillermo Perez) “All the court was stunned by the stories told of the battle against the Wiendol, and many horns of drink were hoisted in honor of Baldar and his mighty band of heroes. There were a few who mourned the fallen, but Asa stood and chastised them. “Why do you weep for the fallen? They have fallen in battle and will awaken in Valhalla. Weep rather for those too cowardly to face their enemies, for they will spend their days suffering for their cowardice.” With that tears of sorrow became tears of joy for all recognized the wisdom of the of the Queen.
Suddenly, the doors of the hall opened and in strode more of Baldar’s men. They were in possession of two prisoners. I swear by all the prophets that I have never seen two more bestial men. I believe them to be men for they walked upright and spoke, but they were covered in coarse, matted, filth-encrusted hair, and they comported themselves in a most uncivilized, bestial manner. Baldar’s man spoke thus, “Mighty King, we have captured these two things trying to escape. What shall we do with them?
Baldar looked at them and after some time asked them who they were and why they had attacked. The men said nothing. One of the guards struck the prisoners and Baldar asked again. The first prisoner spit out a bloody tooth, smiled and spoke. “We have come to kill you and take your lands.” Baldar continued to question the prisoners but they would say no more.
The Queen suddenly stood and motioned for her guards to take the prisoners outside. Baldar asked “What are you doing?” to which Asa replied, “What masculine force can not accomplish, feminine wiles may.” With a strange smile that froze the marrow of my body, the Queen turned and left the hall, following the path of her guards and the prisoners. All was silent. Then a horrible scream shattered the silence. For the next few minutes, silence and tormented wailing alternately filled the hall. A woman fainted and another began shrieking before someone silenced her. The room again went silent and then the sound of an axe falling twice was heard.
The doors to the hall opened and Queen Asa entered. She was splattered with the blood of the two prisoners and in her hands she bore two strange gourds. Gasps were heard throughout the hall as all realized that she was carrying the heads of the two prisoners. She threw then at the veet of the King and announced that the prisoners had told her that they were soldiers in the army of Ansteorra. They and their footsoldiers, the Wiendol, had been sent to weaken the forces of Trimaris. After the Kingdom was sufficiently weakened, the Ansteorran army would invade and capture Trimaris.
Baldar was quick to act. He ordered runners to be sent to every Shire and Barony in the land, that every person in the land prepare to defend Trimaris. But Asa stopped him. Shnd they are strong? Will we allow them to burn our fields and steal our livestock and gold? No! We must go to their lands and destroy the threat at it’s source!” All in the hall were stirred by the force of the Queen’s words and a mighty roar came forth. Swords were freed from scabbards and raised high, and the blood frenzy took hold of many a heart and mind.
Baldar saw the logic of the Queen’s words and raised his hands for silence. The crowd slowly went silent. Baldar spoke thus, “We do not seek war, but the Queen is right! If Ansteorra wants war, Then we shall give them war.” A roar of triumph and blood filled the hall and many swore that the Fenris Wolf was loosed at that moment. This may be true. I heard with my own ears a sound that was truly alive and frightening and powerful. I do not think the Court of Ansteorra realized what fearsome beast was created and began hunting that night. There are stories told that on that very night the Queen of Ansteorra awoke from her slumber screaming that she had heard a wolf howling in the hall outside her chamber. I do not know if this is true. I do know that Baldar sent our runners that very night to tell every person in Trimaris to prepare for the war that was coming. I pray to Allah that they will be prepared.
Demo in St. Augustine
from Castlelore, Feb/March AS XXX, 1996 On Thursday, January 4, 1996, at the request of the Hon. Lady Magdalena, I traveled south to St. Augustine to entertain at a feast honoring the parents of the noble gentle students of this school. The great hall was festooned with the hearaldic devices represented the various families which were in attendance. The hostess, and her assistants, were bedecked in the most refined of period costumes. Each set of garb had been faithfully recreated from a book which contained colorful paintings of the era which we refer to as the Middle Ages. Upon arrival I changed from my mundane garg to that of a wandering minstrel, thanks to the diligent work of the Hon. Lady Magdalena, and upon finding a quiet corner began to fill the air with recorder mucic, to provide entertainment to the assembled lords and ladies. Whilst I was thus employed, several of those in attendance made inquires regarding the instruments I was playing. Patiently, and with enthusiasm, I explained to each petitioner the history of the recorder. There were many who stood in front of me and with strange little boxes, from which lights flashed upon occasion, stored images of yours truly for future reference. Eventually, the hostess looked upon my humble entertainment with approval and signaled to the kitchen staff to prepare me a plate of the evening repast. With great thanks I ate may meal, and continued to receive many complements on the merriment I had added to the occasion.
As the evening came to a close, a knight-in-training, Igor of Duncan’s Clan, gave a demonstration on various techniques he used in combat. I was given the opportunity to offer a few humble words. During this time I spoke of our society and of the bardic arts, as well as other arts and craft endeavors, which also engaged our members. The evening came to a close following my brief presentation. I changed back into my mundane clothes and returned to the warmth of my humble chamber. submitted by Bill Jackman
Scots Welsh War III
1-5/7-96 (flyer) House Gwaidlydd Blaydd, Clan Claigh Dubh, and the Kingdom of Trimaris proudly present Scots Welsh War III at Wewa. Choose a side in this epic war, as the Scots and Welsh take up arms once again! This rivalry of Great Britain now spills forth onto the shores of the Emerald Isle. Hone your blades, string your bows, and set your sails for Ireland! Battles/Activities: Best of 3 Field Battles, Portal Battle, Bridge Battle, Mountain Pass Battle – all will include combat archery. Art/Sci competition for a war point. Autocrat Lord Kaine Asheburn, Feastcrat Cynan ap Gruffydd.
from “At Sword’s Point” February 1996 Jarl Seosaidh mac Seosaidh held onto the disputed Irish lands in a glorious victory against the Welsh allies, though he later agreed to lease them to his defeated foe, Earl Benen MacTyre. The Scots-Welsh War included fighters from Sangre del Sol, many of whom have pledged loyalty to Seosaidh’s House Blacksword. Lord Lorccan Cinaeth MacDara, our shire marshal, reported that the Welsh won the “No Allies” Field Battle, the Rapier Battle and the heavy weapons Resurrection Battle. The Scots won the Bridge Battle, the portal Battle, the Main Field battle, the Archery competition, the Art/Sci point and, collectively, the War. Sangre had a strong showing in the Art/Sci competition, with entries of Lord Bjorn Siggurdsson called Barak. He submitted a drum and a tunic that his wife, Bantiarna Evayne, made. A couple of the knights brought a huge ramp, Lorccan said, and “we practiced charging up the ramp and diving into the middle of the army. We’ll be using it a Gulf Wars. The small number of archers on either side were most influential in the battle. Just when you least expected it, you’d catch an arrow. Following the battles, Lorccan reported, Seosaidh announced his victory over Benen and the Irish-Welsh allies. He offered to give back the land if Benen could best him in two out of three fights. The first and Third bouts resulted in double kills. In the second bout, Seosaidh won by dropping to his knees, which took him out of Benen’s visual range because of his helmet – and then he clocked him with a greatsword from his knees. Because of the Scot’s prowess on the battlefield and off, Lorccan said, Earl Benen did not regain his lands by force. However, Jarl Seosaidh offered to work out the details whereby Benen could lease his lands from the Scots for a fee to be determined at a later date once the King’s council could be obtained. Benen grudgingly agreed – and there was much rejoicing…

Castlelore, Feb/March AS XXX, 1996 “What I Did During Winter Art-Sci, by Wilhelm Frauenlob
The first evening was set aside for the checking in of the good gentles who would be attending this special event, so no planned activities had been organized. After getting my gear stowed away in the Prince’s cabin; a fluke of scheduling as I am a lowly wandering minstrel and no person of honor or position. I journeyed to the main hall where I set up my recorders and entertained those who assembled for some 45 minutes. After that I mingled with others from various municipalities, and was glad for the occasional smile from a familiar face from one of my fellows from Castlemere. The receiption I received from the good gentles of Trimaris was most pleasing and I stayed up to a very late hour conversing about various topics, both SCA and mundane.
On Saturday morning, I slept late but still managed to get a plateful of the delicious breakfast which had been prepared for the masses. Aft that my very first task was to set up my display for the Art/Sci competition. I entered my humble bardic robe and vest, as an example of Western European Renaissance garb. There was no documentation accompanying the exhibit. I was only able to garner 3 points; which did contribute in a very small way to the recognition of our humble shire as the official “Patron of the Arts.”
Once the setting up was completed, and all the judging forms were filled out correctly; I busied myself by taking TRU classes in various topics. In addition, I took several occasions to walk around the encampment to see what the good gentiles of our Kingdom were doing. Several times I also checked in with our Seneschal, The Hon. Lady Magdalena, to see what the folks of Castlemere in particular were doing. Two highlights of the afternoon was attending an introduction to flute class, at which I was able to help the rather young instructor, Duclcinea, gain some confidence and insight into the recorder. She in turn taught me two very simple, but fun songs. The other highlight was my last minute entry into thetold a story of Henry V and the victory at Agincourt. The judges decided that owning to the lack of competition, none of the entries were deemed worth of Royal recognition, so our Yoshii retained his position.
That evening at feast, I once again related my story. It was the first time I had ever participated as an entertainer at a Royal feast. But not withstanding, I enjoyed myself and it seemed that my efforts did not spoil too many appetites. Of course, my humble story could not compare to the delicious variety of foods which were presented in course after stomach filling course. After the feast, I found several fellow recorder players, with whom I spent considerable time playing various period pieces and building strong fellowship. After proving that I could carry a tune with my bass recorder, I was asked to become part of a fledgling dance band which is being formed to play at Kingdom events. This activity carried well past the bewitching hour of midnight. Having been well fed and having found hearty companionship, I retired to my luxurious bed and was dead to the world the second my head touched the pillow.
The very next morning, I clothed myself in that which is common to the mundane world, packed up my meager belongings and returned to the locale of our shire. After having such a magical time with the good citizens of Trimaris, it was with great sadness that I made this transition. However, I comforted myself with plans for the future Laureate and Bardic competitions.

Esteban Francisco Alvares de Leon
from “At Sword’s Point”, February 1996 Lady Sancia the Sly “King Baldar Longstrider brought few men but many honors to Southkeep when he graced the Sea Dragon Tourney on January 27. The day was mainly spent on trying to conquer the fortress at Greynolds Park. And it was crowned by a court in which His Royal Highness awarded many gentles for their services and talents. Called before the throne were: Alastair McQuistion, who was given an AOA; Lady Branwyn ferch Madoc, who was called in from the kitchen to receive an Argent Palm; Esteban Francisco Alvares de Leon, who was likewise given and AOA; Lord Lorccan Cinaeth MacDara was awarded the Argent Morningstar; Lady Sancia the Sly received the Trefoil Argent and the Tradewinds Trimaris; William de Cordoba, who insisted on kneeling when he received his AOA despite his injured knee. Court was followed immediately by a delicious Viking feast – just the thing to serve to a Viking King. During the feast, Lord Cole of Cornwall, a great entertainer in his own right, introduced a steady stream of singers and poets to add to our pleasure. The evening concluded with a bardic outside the old stone hall. Earlier in the day the action centered around the fortress across the way. Lorccan had the following report: The original idea was that the King would lead a force of Vikings to assault the combined strength of Southkeep, Sangre del Sol and Sea March. But he arrived with only one man, his herald, Lord Guillaume Dammartin Aglovale De Vey, and without disparaging this warrior’s prowess, “Dammartin does not an army make.” So Lorccan made a tactical decision. Casting off his former alliance with our brother shires, he threw the Sangre force to the aid of the king. It was a costly move. When Southkeep first sued for our assistance, our marshal demanded a fee, to be paid in cookies. This fee was gathered (or rather baked) and ready to be delivered with much pomp. When we deserted to the opposing side, the fee was forfeit. Alas! Once the new alliances had been agreed on, the battle began. Both armies took turns attacking and defending the castle, which turned out to be an extremely defensible fortress. It proved impossible to dislodge whichever army held the fort. Adding to the mayhem were archers on both sides. A curiosity on the field was the trebuchet, a type of catapult, that was constructed on the field. Though it was tested with a “boulder”(a duct-tape shrouded clorox bottle), it was never used in the fighting.
Talewinds, February AS XXX, 1996 From the Journal Ibn Fadlan (Translated by Master Guillermo Perez) “Concerned for His future and the future of His kingdom, Baldar consulted the Wise Woman, also called the Angel of Death. He gathered His heroes to Him and visited the ancient crone. The Angel of Death was not surprised at the king’s visit and welcomed him into her hovel. The King asked her to look into the future and to see what would become of Baldar and Trimaris. The Angel looked, and when she spoke her tone was soft. “Though mistletoe is harvested, still the tree grows strong.” At this the King grew pale. He stood silently and, followed by his men, left the Angel of Death’s presence. Back at his longhouse he made each of us swear that we would not even talk of the visit. He turned to Bytor and called him forward. “You are the strongest and bravest of my warriors. If I should fall, you will rule over this our land.” Bytor bowed, thus accepting the King’s command.
Preparations for the coming War proceeded as quickly as possible during the Winter season. Baldar and Asa sent messengers throughout the Kingdom so as to keep informed on the progress of each of their Baronies and shires. Their Majesties paid special attention to the Shire of Oldenfeld. As it is the northernmost shire of the Kingdom and Guardian of the Northern Marches, it would be the first to face an invasion. The Lions of Oldenfeld proved to be a powerful and disciplined company of warriors and the King was much pleased with their preparation and skill at arms.
As everything seemed to be at peace for the Winter season, Baldar and Asa proclaimed a Winter festival to be held near the Barony of Darkwater. Artisans from all over the Kingdom were invited to show their work and compete in a Grand Competition. The streets were gaily decorated and despite the chill in the air, the people of Trimaris came to celebrate. The Arts and Sciences Faire was a magnificent display of skill and craftsmanship and all were pleased by the festive season, allowed any who wished to attend. I saw with my own eyes people from every walk of life attend this Royal Court. High-born and low stood shoulder to shoulder as King Baldar and Queen Asa entered and held their Court. There was a palpable excitement in the air, as many of those in attendance had never attended Court before. At the close of Court, Baldar proclaimed a night of feasting and revelry. The cheers of the populace were deafening.
All seemed right in the world as Baldar and Asa sat at Royal feast that night. But into the hall walked the Angel of Death, and the King rose in shock. “What is your business here,” Baldar asked. The Angel of Death pointed to the arm hanging from the rafters, an arm taken from the Wiendol in combat. “What of it,” Baldar demanded. “I took it in battle from my enemy.” The Angel of Death replied, “The Wiendol do not leave their dead behind. They believe that for the spirits of their dead to be at peace, their bodies must be consumed by the Great Mother of the Wiendol. They will come tonight. They are creatures of darkness and fog and tonight the land will be shrouded in mist. They will come tonight to reclaim the arm you took in battle.” The King replied, “We drove them away the lat time they came and we will do so again.” With that, the King called his men together and the company left the hall.
I report what happened next though I did not see it all. We encountered the Wiendol and rove them off. The fighting was hard and took its toll on many brave warriors. When we returned to the hall, the room was in chaos. The Wiendol had attacked and had stolen the arm. The Queen was covered in blood but after the King went to her we found out that it was the blood of a Wiendol that had attacked her. She had defended herself and wounded the Wiendol. The King was enraged; that the Wiendol had dared to invade His Kingdom and His hall was an insult not to be born, but that they had dared lay hands on His queen required payment in blood. Baldar swore a mighty and terrible oath to the gods above, that He would travel to the land of the Wiendol and kit I shuddered knowing that we would soon be venturing into an evil land that would be seeking our blood.,

Announcement
Talewinds, April A.S.XXX, 1996 Lady Vanessa Dreamsinger (mka Vanessa Lawrence) of the Shire of Sea March (formerly of Three Rivers Barony in Calontir) died suddenly on February 21, 1996, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall. She had held the Troubadour Bells for the Kingdom of Trimaris and is most well known for her song “The Vigil” which was written for Syr Demetrius – upon the occasion of his Knighting. She graced our Kingdom with her charm and her singing and we shall all miss her very much
Providence Christian School Demo
Glymmernote, May 1996 On 2-23-96, the Shire of Glymmerholde held a demo at the Providence Christian School in Cape Coral. Lord Robin and Lord Maati did an educational lecture for a school assembly, then Liam, James, Sonja, Alexander, Alexander MadCuffy and Gawain participated in a dual fighting demo-fencing and heavy weapons fighting. School officials were thrilled with our demo and have asked us to come back whenever we would like to. They also presented us with a check for $30.00 as a donation to the shire.
Other Glymmerhold Demo’s
Sometime prior to the Providence Christian School Demo, Glymmernote published a letter from the Seneschal giving event reports on two demo’s that the shire had done, however, there was no mention of dates for either of these demos. “We’ve had a busy couple of months yet again. We have done several demo’s in the past couple of months. There was a fighting demo at the Blue and Gold Dinner for the Ft. Myers Boy Scout Troop 1443. James Godwinson, Sonja the Gelder, Alexander and Liam Mackay, Merling, myself and a guest of James’ were in in attendance. This was a dual fighting demo, rapier and heavy weapons fighting were featured. After the demo, shire members posed for pictures with the Boy Scouts and their parents, and we were treated to a very lovely buffet.
One of our most exciting and more publicly exposed demo’s (and NO this kind of public exposure isn’t illegal) was the Edison Pageant of Light Parade. This is a nationally televised parade and the largest night time parade in the country. The shire has tried in years past to participate in the Edison Pageant of Light Parade and we were finally successful this year, garnering a spot in the parade right in front of the Parade Royalty floats. In all, 21 members marched with the Shire of Glymmerholde (we would have had another 20 people, however 10 people were marching with other groups, several shire members were unable to attend, etc) We were, without a doubt, the most unorganized looking entry in the parade, as we did not march in any kind of a formation. We toyed with the crowds, kissed lots of ladies’ hands, flirted with several parade officials, skipped, danced, sun and made merry along the 4 mile parade route. Several fighters i the shire provided a moving battle in the streets of Ft. Myersem on. Parade officials were so pleased with our performance and attendance that we have been invited back next year, and we are working with parade officials to enter a float. We will also be inviting one and all throughout the kingdom to participate in this event, national television coverage is a great thing for the society and the more people we have in our society entourage the better. I would like to particularly thank Catarina Branchaud (who is also our new Hospitaller) for shuttling us back and forth from my house to the beginning of the parade route and making sure everyone was in good shape before we stepped off (the chicken noodle soup was exquisite).

Jacksonville Ren Faire
Castlelore Feb/March 1996 On 3-9-96 the Shire of Castlemere is to participate in the fifth Annual Renaissance faire in Jacksonville at the Agricultural fairgrounds. .In a letter to the Shire, Lady Alix de Lyon states “we are currently in negotiations to obtain a better food service contract with the fairgrounds, so that the shire may reap some of the benefits that An Crosaire does from Hoggetowne. However, this means work! And so we need people to help with the faire. We still need entertainers (Contact Gwyndolyn) merchants (contact Guillaume Le Clerc) Parking crat (contact Xena) and others that I fail to think of at the moment. Please see me if you are dying to help. I know we are about to move into a very busy demo season for the shire, but this one is of utmost importance – it is seen by more of the public than any other functions and event though SCA is merely a sponsor, it bodes well to see it run successfully. I know previous fairs have taxed us heavily, but this year will hopefully see a good return beginning for Castlemere.” Lady Alix de Lyon

Talewinds, May AS XXXI 1996 “From the Crown” Unto Our Most Beloved People Trimaris. Greetings! Thank you to everyone who made Coronation a success in spite of the dreadful weather conditions that threatened all of us! The Queen gives special thanks to all the members of the populace that waited patiently during the delay, while Their Majesties directed the relocation of the Coronation ceremony. We appreciate your kindness and understanding. The King is thankful to those gentles who ferried himself, His Queen, and the King of Atlantia to and from the feasthall in the pouring rain… and we mean pouring! Thank you to the baronies, shires, cantons, households and peers that have already or will be asking for volunteers to help retain for the Crown this reign. The Crown would like everyone to have an opportunity to serve whether they have ever done so before or not…Congratulations to Guiseppe Francesco di Borgia on his pending elevation tot he Laureate at the upcoming Crown Tourney. His needlework is truly exquisite, his appearance is always unquestionable, and his demeanor whether in jest or all seriousness denotes a Peer of the realm in all ways. We will be very glad to elevate him to a position of honor in Trimaris. Giuseppe, did we mention there is a Laurel Tax?…” Bytor, King, Anastasiya, Queen
Glymmernote, May 1996 About 25 members of the shire were in attendance for the coronation of Bytor fitzGherld and Anastaysia Zadorova. No armigerous awards were presented to any shire members, however, our very own Michael Alexander Bain MacDuffy, better known as “Kube” won the Troubador Laureate competition. This is the first time that any member of Glymmerhold has won any of the Laureate competitions. (Ld. Breuse has placed second on two separate occasions in the Poet Laureate competition). We are all tickled pink that you won “Kube”!!!. We did not make our presentations to Their Majesties due to the lousy weather and the fact that half the shire membership decided to scatter to hotels. Thdn’t feel right (or dry, or clean) doing the presentation without those other shire members who had worked so hard on the presentation gifts. We will make our presentation to Their Majesties at Gathering of the Clans or perhaps TMT.
Talewinds, April AS XXX, 1996 Gregorian From the Journal of Ibn Fadlan (Translated by Master Guillermo Perez) “Winter finally released its grip on the land and Spring began to show its dominance. Baldar and Asa began receiving reports of the enemy massing its troops and decided that it was time to move. The Army of Trimaris marshalled in the border stronghold of Oldenfeld and set off to destroy the forces that had gathered in opposition. The weather held for some time and the Army made good time.
Soon King Baldar and His forces entered the Land of the Wiendol, the region that separated Trimaris from Ansteorra. it was a cold, stunted and evil land inhabited by a twisted and gnarled race. Baldar sent out his scouts to watch for any sign of the Wiendol activity. The scouts saw nothing during the day. At night, however, it was a different story.
The first few nights the sentries reported activity: furtive movements, sounds of horses and men in the distance, even a minor attack or two. It wasn’t until the fifth night in the land of the Wiendol that the fog rolled in thick and cloying and the Wiendol attacked as a group. Seing that the fog would be thick that night, Baldar and the Trimarian army were prepared for the attack. The battle was intense bu the Wiendol forces eventually fell back for the night. These attacks continued every night that there was fog. No Wiendol force could hope to destroy the might of the Trimarian Army but King Baldar realized that if the harassment continued, his army would be weakened and tired by the time the Ansteorran army was encountered.
Baldar sent out scouts to find the village or town of the Wiendol. He reasoned that if he could kill the Great Mother of the Wiendol, the Wiendol people would be unable or unwilling to fight him. A few days passed and Baldar finally received tow pieces of news on the same morning. first, the army of Ansteorra was reported to be nearing and would soon join with the Wiendol forces. Second, a scout had found a cave entrance into the Wiendol undergroubattle with Ansteorra. With that done he gathered His Heroes to him and set to kill the Wiendol Mother.
I will not waste your time with the details of our journey through the caverns. most of the time was spent sneaking through dark, dank caverns trying to avoid the Wiendol patrols. This was not too difficult in that the Wiendol are nocturnal and that their patrols are sluggish and poorly disciplined during the daylight hours. Finally, we came upon a large cavern in which we discovered the Wiendol Mother. With my own eyes did I see this horrifying monster.
She was a disgusting creature, covered in filth and grime. She was horribly fat and the rolls of blubber that made up her white, puffy flesh lay exposed for all to see. Indeed, the only things she wore were a few pieces of jewelry, a necklace, a hair pin, a few rings. We saw that she was busy eating the dead body of one of her warriors, no doubt slain in battle the previous night. it gave us perverse pleasure to know that we were responsible for much of her weight gain over the last few days, in that we had killed many of her warriors. The Wiendol believe that their spirits cannot leave their dead bodies unless the Wiendol Mother consumes all their remains.
Baldar could no longer bear the sight of this disgusting spectacle any longer; He drew his sword and fell upon the bloated Wiendol. The Wiendol Mother’s screech was indescribable and sent a ripple of horror through my being. I began to move to help Baldar kill the monster but Bytor stopped me. he said that Baldar would face the creature by himself and that it was our job to make sure that the other Wiendol did not interfere with the combat. The Heroes formed a circle around Baldar and his enemy and prepared for the onslaught of the Wiendol. Word of our attack spread slowly, for we only faced small groups of Wiendol who were easily defeated. During a lull in our fighting I was able to see the end of Baldar’s struggle. Baldar weak from the scratches and bite marks the the Wiendol Mother whose body was pierced in numerous places. Sensing her end nearing, the Wiendol mother pulled the hair pin from her oily, lank hair and stabbed Baldar in the stomach. In his berserk rage, Baldar drew back his sword and struck the Wiendol mother’s head from her body.
Bytor yelled to his King that it was time to leave. Baldar turned and with understanding in His eyes, lead the way out of the nightmare realm of the Wiendol. We encountered Wiendol on the way out but made quick work of them. As we returned to camp, Baldar swore all of us to secrecy as to the nature of the wound He had received. He said that He knew that it would eventually prove to be a septic, fatal wound and He did not want the Army to know this. With the coming battle against Ansteorra, He did not want his troops dispirited.
The next few days went by with bloody speed. We were able to destroy the armies of the enemy. The Wiendol never showed themselves as a unit and I am not sure what happened to their degenerate race. the Ansteorran army fought wit skill and strength but we inflicted so much damage upon them that they finally withdrew. it will be some time before they will be able to raise arms against Trimaris. Baldar led his troops to victory never once giving away his secret. it was not until the army began the return to Trimaris that the King’s health faltered and word got out that the Baldar was dying.

Talewinds, May AS XXXI, 1996, From the Journal of Ibn Fadlan (translated by Master Guillermo Perez)
Baldar returned to Trimaris with His army. The Kingdom had repulsed the invader and the Kingdom would once again know peace. But there was no joy in Baldar’s homecoming. The wound that He had received from the Wiendol Mother was festering and Baldar knew that he was not long for this world. He pushed the speed of the army so that He would get back to Trimaris while still alive.
Baldar and Asa met with their advisors and trusted men. After a long night of meetings, word went out that there would be a hastily called Court as soon as representatives from all over the Kingdom could be gathered. The day of Baldar’s Court finally arrived. And it was none too soon as every person in attendance saw. The King came into Court supported by his Queen. His face was gaunt and drained of life and there was a stiffness in his gait that proclaimed His nearness to death.
Baldar and Asa began to dispense with the business of Their Court, Suddenly, the King slumped in the Throne. Asa went to Him to check on Him. As She did a tall blonde figure entered the Court. I saw with my own eyes the figure of a Valkyrie standing before the Thrones of Trimaris. Baldar was ready to go with her but Asa, fire flashing in Her eyes, stood between Her King and the Valkyrie. Asa held her weapon up ready to do battle with the Warrior Maiden. She said to the Valkyrie, “You can not take him. He is MY husband and I will not give up what is mine without a fight!”
The Valkyrie responded, “Then we are not at odds, I have come not for Baldar but for you, Asa Flaxenhair. We Valkyries have seen your Warrior spirit and would invite you to join us.” The Valkyrie went on to inform Baldar that he would die that night in His bed, thus denying Him a place in Valhalla. Baldar drew His sword and challenged the Valkyrie to battle. In this way, He would die in battle and be with Asa in Valhalla. But the Valkyrie demurred, telling Baldar that the Valkyries werea. Baldar decided that the only way for He and Asa to stay together was to defeat the Valkyrie in battle. They fought. The ringing clang of silvered steel filled the air as the two Warriors duled. Baldar fought bravely but had no chance as the wound in his side robbed Him of His strength. Finally Baldar fell, the Valkyrie standing over him prepared to end His life and send Him to the Valhalla. Again, Asa interposed Herself. The Valkyrie drew back her swaord to end both their lives.
From the back of the hall came the voice of a woman. The Valkyrie halted her sword. She turned and saw the woman at the back of the Court and fell to her knees. The newcomer came forward and the Valkyrie named her a Frigga, a goddess of the Norse. Frigga crossed to Baldar and Asa and informed them of another option. Frigga’s Hall, Fenslir, was a place reserved for those couple whose love was so strong that it would last beyond the veil of death. Frigga offered the King and Queen a place in her hall if they wished it. Baldar and Asa looked into each others eyes and. professing their love for each other, accepted Frigga’s offer. Frigga and the Valkyrie left the Court; Baldar and Asa returned to their Thrones hand-in-hand. The herald called for the next item of business. During that business, Baldar and Asa, still hand-in-hand, again saw the face of Frigga.
Thus it was that Mighty Bytor took the Throne of Trimaris. The House of Asgard continued to rule wisely, well, and often over the lands of Trimaris. Under King Bytor’s rule, Trimaris prospered. There was one great adventure that Bytor did have to face during his reign. While on a trip of State to the lands of Atlantia, King Bytor was confronted by…” (Here the Journal ends. As of this date the missing parts of the manuscript have yet to be recovered)

The Glymmernote, August 1996 Glymmerholde made a very exceptional showing at TMT this year. With over 30 shire members in attendance, the shire presented TRM with a $200 check for the Kingdom Travel Fund and about 2,000 gold coins to spread the wealth of Trimaris all over the Known World. That made Glymmerholde’s total donation to the Kingdom Travel Fund $300.00. TRM were impressed with the turnout of members from the shire, as were many others who had no idea that Glymmerholde was once again a vibrant, active organization. We received many positive comments from the populace on our presentation and our generosity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of the shire who contributed ot the Travel Fund donation. I know it wasn’t easy for everyone to “cough up” that extra money week in and week out, but I am sure that our donation to the travel fund will make a big difference in how Trimaris is represented throughout the Known World. Margaret Mac Gregor, Seneschal
Thirty Year Celebration
Talewinds, May AS XXXI An Tir welcomes the Known World to the Society’s Thirty Year Celebration, 6-7/16-96 at the Clark County Fairgrounds north of Portland Oregon. 10 days of tournaments, 10 days of dancing, 10 days of archery, 10 days of bardic circles, 10 days of rapier combat, 10 days of merchants, 10 days of war scenarios, 10 days of classes and 10 days of meeting gentles from every Kingdom in the Knowne World.
(Wyvernwood Historian’s report) Early this summer His royal Majesty Bytor Fitzgerald and five members of Wyvernwood, along with one member of Narval Dorado attended the 30th Year Celebration in An Tir. Besides His Majesty, the Trimarians in attendance were Lord Alistair, Aubrey, Lady Alienore DeLochar, Dominus Henricus, Lord Ian from Narval Dorado, and I, Lord Jens Vetrar. The event went very well, with very friendly people, enjoyable cool, dry weather, and much to marvel at. The Knowne World choir included our own Aubrey, and those in charge of the concert hall, upon hearing that His Majesty of Trimaris would be attending, arranged seating for His Majesty and entourage in the center of the front row. The concert ended with a rousing “catch” song that made His Majesty burst forth laughing so that all could hear and laugh with Him. The merchanting, revelry, and fighting were well planned and left those in attendance in want of nothing. Throughout the week, all the Trimarians were well fed by the Barony of the Wastelands who were camped behind us, and then well fed and entertained by the Barony of Blatha an Oir and their wonderful Baroness Isabeau. The event was well attended, with my own badge numbered in the mid-4000 range and gentles arriving steadily for three more days after me. – reported by Lord Jens Vetar

Southern Tourney
Glymmernote August 1996 We had a very successful non-event in June, The Southern Tourney went smashingly and the shire represented itself well amongst our guests from around the Kingdom. My thanks to the Shire of Sangre del Sol for their enthusiastic attendance. We all made some great new friends and I sincerely hope that we can do this again sometime. The shire took in $50.00 in donations from by ebullient “passing of the hat.” At the business meeting after Southern Tourney, it was decided that the shire would keep half of the funds collected at the grand social and donate the other half to the Make a Wish Foundation in the name of Derek Raeder, the son of David and April Raeder, who passed away in May. David and April are members of the Shire of Sangre del Sol. Margaret MacGregor, Seneschal.
From Lord Breuse Hartswood, Knights Marshal “Congratulations to Sonja and James Godwinson for their authorizations at Southern Tourney. They accounted for 4 of the 9 new authorizations that day. Congratulations also to Baron Roland de Germaine and David of DunTyr for their victories in the different lysts held at Southern Tourney.
Summer Art/Sci
Talewinds, March AS XXX, 1996 6-14/16-96 The Stronghold of the Northern Marches presents 196 Summer Arts and Sciences Competition at North Florida Christian Services Camp. Along with the Arts/Sci Competition, there will be many children’s activities, Masques Laureate Competition, heavy & Light Weapons Lyst, Candle light Feast and the pool will be open. Autocrat Lady Corrine Castilla, Feastcrat Lady Gwendolyn Kaye MacVeigh
Talewinds, September ASXXX, 1996 From the Arts and Sciences: Unto Trimarians All Fair, Greetings from Jed Silverstar. Thanks and congratulations to all the gentles who made this Summer’s Art/Sci Faire one of the bes in memory! There were over twice as many entries as at the previous Faire and enough judges to subdivide the Divisions for faster judging, enabling us to accommodate the Cornet’s request for an earlier court and feast. Only three of four items were unjudged when it came time for the hall to be cleared, and I have taken steps to assure that those entries will be judged before all others at the next Faire. My thanks to those gentles for their good sportsmanship and understanding.
As those who attended know, the judging hall was besieged by lightning for much of the afternoon. The new Chancellor of Ciphers, Lady Signyo, did her best under the circumstances, but was forced to tally the award scores in her home shire. I will therefore post the results next month, both in Talewinds and in a mailing to the A&S Officers and Seneschals throughout the kingdom. This mailing will also include full sets of the current forms and rules, since some shires seemed to be in want of them.
Experts around the kingdom should also be hearing soon from Lord Dwydion and Lady Andrea, the new Co-Chancellors of Trimaris Royal University. Their early efforts will center mainly on identifying our best potential teachers and committing them to share their knowledge at every opportunity, but most especially at Art/Sci Faires.
Once again, to those who helped to crat, judge, tally and calligraphy, I extend the kingdom’s gratitude. To the victorious competitors, congratulations. To those whose scores and hopes did not agree, I encourage you to continue participating, especially as members of the judging teams. Remember that any category you enter you also have the right to judge. If you found that competition is not to your taste (and there’s no shame in that – competition isn’t the best route for everyone) remember that you also have the option of entering any category for Display Only. You can also enter on a learning basis, requesting that the judges offer Kind Advice Only. There are plenty of options for every level of expertise and every manner of presenter. If you want to make the system the best it can be for people like you, your full participation is the only key.
I regret to say that the Masque Laureate has failed two times in succession to draw enough competitors for that honor to trade hands. As with all the Laureates, the Masque Laureate requires materials that is in some way original to the performer. For the Poet Laureate, the text must be original and performed solo by the author. For the Troubadour Laureate, the lyric and tune must both be original and performed solo by the author, For the Masque Laureate, any other manner of performance, solo or group, is permissible as long as at least half to its elements are original to the entrant(s). In the case of dances, for example, the choreography is always original although the music may or may not be so. Purely re-creative performances, solo or group, are better suited to competitive presentations in the Bardic and Performing Arts Division of Art/Sci Faires. I hope this brief explanation assists performers everywhere in channeling their energies where they will encounter the best possible audiences.
Lion’s Tourney Pas D’armes
Talewinds, June AS XXXI, 1996 On 6-21/23-96 The Shire of Oldenfeld’s fighting unit, the Lions, will be hosting Lion’s tourney. This event will be slightly different in that it will be a full blown, pomp and colors pas d’armes. We encourage everyone to attend, and for those who have period pavilions, banners, pennants or other forms of heraldry, bring them on over to Oldenfeld and display them around the lyst field and add color and atmosphere to the tourney. We would like the fighters to have at least two of the following: a banner, a tabard and/or shield with your herald’s device on them. And fighters MUST have a consort to fight for! There will be archery, fencing and above all, fighting! Honor and Chivalry will be top priorities at this event, so be prepared to look good, fight well and most importantly, have fun with the folks from Oldenfeld! Autocrat Sir Jean Paul Ruthendale & Lord Cedric of Dorchester

Pennsic War XXV
The Kingdom of the East is pleased to announce the Twenty-fifth Annual Pennsic War to be held August 2 through August 18, 1996 at Cooper’s Lake Campground, co-sponsored by the Kingdom of the Middle. The Lord High Mayor (autocrat) is Master Ian Mitchell of Clan Mitchell
(Wyvernwood Historian’s Report) At the Great Pennsic War this year, Trimaris sided with the East Kingdom and fought gloriously. The East won a few and lost a few, but Trimaris generally fought quite well. In attendance were a fairly large group of our Wyvernwood citizens, Oldenfelders, House Kyburg, Rolling Thunder, Sir Cedric’s Bear Clan, Asgaardians, An Crosairans and a fair host of independents as well. In the summer months preceding the Pennsic War, our Barony made and painted table runners with the devices of all the Kingdoms of the Knowne World. These were set out in the place of each set of crowned heads at the Trimaris Royal Dinner, and our visitors were duly impressed. Sir Karl Kyburg directed the servers for the Royal Dinner, and many members of Wyvernwood served. The Wyvernwood consort played for the Royalty present, as well as for the Eldormere Coronets in their principality encampment. In the great Court at the end of the War, King Bytor and Queen Anastasia expressly thanked the Barony of Wyvernwood for the endless and timely work that our Barony has performed for them and for the reigns proceeding theirs. In the barony’s efforts to support the Kingdom, one last not would be that our Honorable Lady Margurite Isadora de Riva was again the Trimarian Landcrat for Pennsic.- Lord Jens Vetrar
Bog Bash V
Talewinds, August AS XXXI, 1996 On 8-16/18-96 the Barony of Wyvernwood presents Bog Bash V at Camp Keystone. “So hail to the swamplands, the forests and coasts” All are welcome to join us for a weekend of fun and frivolity in our southern fens. There will be much to do and see with: A reversed living dead lyst, archery, Bog Ball, classes, a Quest, Kill the Herald Relay, Paint a Pict, Family Feud and Waterlympics. The day’s events will be complete with court, feast and last, but certainly not least, revelry. Autocrat, Ld Staffan Thorbert, Feastcrat Tatiana de Thornberg.
(Wyvernwood Historian’s Report) On 8-16/20-96 was the fifth annual Bog Bash, the same weekend as the final battles of Pennsic. This event was autocrated by Lord Staffan Thorbert, and featured such activities as Archery, Bog Ball, Paint a Pict, Family Feud, and the Waterlympics. Awards and prizes were given tot he winner of each event, and included such clever awards as the winners of the Waterlympics receiving gold, silver and bronze sand dollars on cords. A satisfying feast was prepared and served the bhe kitchen crew of Lady Tatiana de Thorberg. Both nights of the event were marked by revelry all night at the boathouse on the dock, including the return of the Lion’s Cub Tavern which appeared at Wyvernwood events up to six years ago, but is now back.
Fall Coronation
Talewinds, August XXXI, 1996 On 8-31/9/1-96, the Shires of Southkeype and Sangre del Sol invite you to the Fall Coronation of Sir Sulymain Spite and Baroness Alianore d’Australis at Camp Wewa. Autocrat Bantiarna Riognach Slaine ni Chonaill, Feastcrat Lady Branwyn ferch Madoc.
(Wyvernwood Historian’s Report) In the latter part of the summer was the magnificent Coronation of Sir Solomen Spite and Baroness Alianore de Medici d’Astralis as the King and Queen of Trimaris. We take pride in claiming yet another set of Royalty as being from Wyvernwood, and as such they are receiving full support of all members of the Barony. At a beautiful final court, fron the hands of Their Majesties Bytor and Anastasia, the Barony of Wyvernwood received an Augmentation of Arms from the Crown for its interminable support of the Crowns of Trimaris through many reigns. This was awarded to us only moments before the accidental death of Queen Anastasia upon the butt-spike of her admirer and servant named Gunnar, and the broken-hearted cries of King Bytor, which were more than He could bear in this life. None present had doubt of His Majesty’s affection toward Anastasia, as that same broken heart was all that was needed to bring Bytor away from this mortal coil which we of lesser station must endure.
From the new Crowns, Solomen and Alianore, came these awards of honor to deserving members of the Barony: Lisabeta Maria da Firenze was elevated to the peerage of Laurel in Italian Culture. Baroness Melisande Aubrey d’Anjou received the Order of the Triskele Trimaris. Countess Nadira Bacharra received the Order of the Trefoil Argent. Lady Maisie of Dun Baron received the Crown’s Order of Gratitude.
The Barony as a whole received a levy from His Majesty Solomen for ten archers and fifty arrows for Gulf Wars VI. A couple of gifts that the new Crowns received from our Baron Aidian Gerhardt de Languedoc and Baroness Marina Sabine Gerhardt were three hundred and forty silver coins ($85.00 U.S.) and especially gifted to Her Majesty was the Wyvernwood Consort, that She may enjoy entertainment upon whichever occasions She may wish. Mistress Lisabeta’s rise to the Laureate was marked by a wonderful party with, of course, Italian theme. The elevation party was very well attended, and continued for many hours. In a candle-lit pavilion was all manner of confections served, champagne and wines, and various gifts to Mistress Lisabeta were displayed along with the scroll depicting her elevation. Outside the pavilion played the Wyvernwood Consort, with an assortment of period music ranging from the courtly and beautiful to the bawdy. Sir Bytor even came over from his adjacent “I’m not the King anymore!” party to listen to the live music and partake in the revelry. Earlier in the summer at the Thirtieth Year Celebration, I had been so impressed with His Majesty’s continued good countenance to us retainers that I did write a poem in His honor, and presented it to Him during an intermission in the music. The poem is attached to this letter for your pleasure.
On Sunday, the Tournament of the Field of Roses was held. It was intended to be three- men melee teams, but since nearly 100 fighters showed and all were ready to show honor to the Order of the Rose, they decided to form teams of six. The teams were bid upon by the populace attending, and our very own Baroness Maria Sabine was highest bidder for a team called “Oldengaard”, for it was comprised of members of the Shire of Oldenfeld and of the House Asgaard. It so turned out that the “Oldengaardians” won the day, allowing Marina to take her pick of the prizes provided by the Ladies of the Order of the Rose. She chose three illuminated letters done by Mistress Rosabel, which she shared with the members of the team.
Talewinds, October AS XXXI, 1996 From the Crown of Trimaris unto all who do read these words. Know that We, Solemon and Alianore, do wish to thank everyone involved in the success of Trimaris’ Fall Coronation. The Crown knows well the work (and aggravation) that goes into organizing an event of this magnitude (over 900 in attendance). To all whose efforts went into this weekend (crats, servers, gateguards, stewards, entertainers, reservations, clean-up crew, toters & fetchers, heralds, marshals, archers, fencers and all others) Our deepest and most sincere gratitude.
To this, We also send Our appreciation for the many wonderful gifts given to Us and to thank those gentles who honored Us by joining in this celebration. To Duchess Anastasiya and Earl Bytor, you have treated Us with the utmost kindness and graciousness. We are so very glad. We also wish to send a very heartfelt thank you to the Companions of the Order of the Rose. The success of this lyst and the sight of over one hundred fighters upon the field was unbelievably inspiring.
Lastly, to Our household and close friends; you clothed, fed, created, followed, transported, nagged and let Us whine (when the need arose). May We so do you honor as you have honored Us.
Trimaris, King Solemon and Queen Alianore do salute you. Vivat Trimaris!
The Glymmernote, Christmas 1996 reported by Lady Margaret MacGregor We had another very large shire turnout for the coronation of Solomon Spite and Alianore deMedici d’Astralis. But before they left the throne, Bytor and Anastaysia called H.L. Breuse Hartswood and the entire shire up in court. You notice I said H.L. Breuse -that’s right, Breuse received his long awaited Grant of Arms! TRM Bytor and Anastaysia called the shire forward to thank them personally for our contributions during their reign to the Kingdom Travel Fund. They were gracious and very warm in their gratitude and the entire shire was very flattered to be recognized in such a manner. AT Solomon and Alianor’s first court, Michael Alexander Bane McDuffy was called forward and presented with a scroll inducting him into the Order of the Bard’s Laureate, having fulfilled his duties and tenure as Trimaris’ Troubadour Laureate. He was also invited to sing at feast Sunday evening and was a bit hit! At feast Saturday evening the shire presented TRM with two large chests of chocolates and two very beautiful framed paintings which were provided by Catarina Dufrene Branchaud. TRM loved the paintings very, very much and enjoyed the chocolates as well.
Peace at Last/Anniversary Event
Talewinds, June AS XXXI, 1996 On 9-7-96 the Shire of Sea March will hold a day long revel to celebrate Peace at Last. Richard the Lionhearted has arranged for the marriage of his sister to the brother of Saladin the Magnificent. Together they will rule all of those lands that are Holy to christian and Moslem alike in a trusting and chivalrous manner. In celebration of this joyful union there will be friendly games of combat for Lords and Ladies. A Blindman’s Tourney (the fighters are blindfolded and their Consorts must direct the blows); M’Lady’s List or Just a Joyful Joust (the lady rides on a wheelbarrow horse holding a lance. Her fighter pushes her and she must impale a ring suspended from a clothspin). Connubial Bliss Tournament (paired fighters tied at the leg, one fighter carries the shield the other the sword)

However, all proceeds from the site fees for camping (aka Weekend with Feast) will go to the Shire of Glymmerholde.
The Glymmernote Christmas 1996 reported by Lady Margaret MacGregor, WELL! this was some gig! AS just about everyone knows, we hosted the 1st annual Ft. Myers Medieval Fair 9-28/29. The event was sponsored by the Riverdale Kiwanis Club. Before I go any further, I think I can speak for everyone in the shire when I say that the members of the Kiwanis Club are truly family now, having shared our joyous and pains and trials and tribulations regarding the fair, and we would also like to thank them for their incredibly generous donation to the shire. We are all looking forward to next year’s fair-planning sessions. What can I say about the Medieval Fair? It was a huge success. We had over 125 vendors at the fair, and by all accounts everyone merchanting made very good money, were very pleased wit the crowd and their locations in Merchant’s Row. Every vendor I spoke with said they would definitely be back next year. And feast- by Gawd! Rocky and Lynn Turk did a fabulous job, along with help from Baron Seigfried and several other people of serving an incredible feast for 200 people. The food was excellent and we hope that Rocky and Lynn will do feast again next year, as wonder comments on their abilities and the meal itself have poured in from all over the kingdom. Without getting into too much more detail right now, the fair was a great success. Thanks to the Riverdale Kiwanis and all the members of the shire, we managed to raise $2,100.00 for the shire treasury.
Harvest Moon Festival
Talewinds, September XXXI, 1996 On 9-27/29-96 the Shire of Oldenfeld presents the Harvest Moon Festival at Camp Indian Springs. “It is harvest time in England; King Arthur and his knights are spending this time feasting, reveling and enjoying the land’s bounty in this time of peace and plenty. So come and join the fun folks of Oldenfeld in this years festival. Some say that the legend of King Arthur was just that, a legend; and some say that he was a real part of history, In order for us to re-create both the myth and reality of Arthur’s England, we in Oldenfeld have put together a spectacular event. Whereas the knights of the round table would be competing in contests of strength and cunning, so too shall we! there will be a pas-style lyst with all the flair that is associated with the great tournaments of old; a wrestling contest for those with stout minds and bodies; a horse race for those fleet of foot; Arthurian Overland Croquet; a Quest for the greatest of all prizes, the Holy Grail; Oldenfeld’s traditional and yet very popular Drawing and Poetry contests. During the feast fit for King Arthur and Queen Gwenevier themselves, there will be a telling of the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. And throughout the rest of the evening dancing, singing and general frivolity will abound, so mark this event on your calendar and don’t miss it for all the swords in the lake! Michaelmas
Talewinds, October A.S. XXXI On 10-11/13-96 The Barony of An Crosaire celebrates their 20th Anniversary, held at North Florida Christian Camp. Our challenge to all fencers, archers, and heavy weapons fighters: Wench & Rapier, Baroness’ Blade Champion’s Lyst, Bacton’s Bad Butts, Hobby Horse Baronial Champion’s Lyst, play Steal the Bacon, armored hopscotch, chess, Mongol Ball, Pente, Backgammon, Paint a Pict, Parcheesi, Rat Pucky, Miller in the Middle, Scavenger hunt, Bells & Pillows & more. Featuring Triskele-Trimaris’ own gambling game. Donations of baked goods, coin of the realm & participants needed for the Baronial Birthday Cake Walk for the land fund. The prelude to Royal and Baronial Courts shall be a game of Sweets for the Sweet, a travel fundraiser. Autocrat H.L. Takara, Feastcrat Contessa Carmenetta Rosia Diez y Rodrigues & Lord Schrymagore
(Tasha reports) The event had just enough people attending to make a nice event. Saturday morning there were three fighters for the heavy weapons list, Bernard, ?, ?. Our autocrat decided to make the lyst more interesting by having the fighters play hopscotch, in full armor, to warm them up. Two valiant fighters started at each end of the hopscotch to finally meet in the middle. When the first two got to the middle, they looked at each other, then at the autocrat with a “what do we do now” look, then looked at their weapons and started hitting each other. To our amazement, it worked! The next match was mounted combat. Each fighter was given a hobbyhorse to ride. The Marshal and the Herald were also mounted. Several members of the audience were given pom poms and encouraged to cheer for the fighter of their choice. The resulting fights were hilarious, with Bernard overcoming his opponents, astride his battle cat, yowling his famous battle cry “Merrrow”.
Then it was time to torment the light weapons fighters. They had to fight holding a “partner” in one arm. For safety reasons stuffed dummies were made. There were two luscious wenches, a blond and brunette, and two brawny males, a red haired Scotsman and a dark haired generic male (both anatomically correct). Our lady fighters, Isaboe and Victoria were shameless, flaunting their “male” companions, i.e. holding them upside down, to distract their opponents. In the mean time, a number of bare chested wrestlers cavorted at the far end of the field. Two of our lady visitors decided the men were having too much fun and asked if they could participate. Since they were not allowed to remove their eir lower garments. The shirts were long enough to cover almost to their knees, however they took unfair advantage by wearing lace panties. They thrashed Inigo by ganging up on him.
The Archers also had plenty of things to shoot at. Lord Baectaon and Lord Donnal had a multitude of small game targets beside the standard targets. During the day there were other activities for the less martially inclined. There were board games, chess, pente, etc available in the hall. For the younger members and the young at heart there was a scavenger hunt and, of course, Rat Pucky.
For the Baronial Birthday Party there were many birthday cakes to be won at the Cake Walk Fundraiser. There was a red velvet cake decorated as Hedgehog (which I was fortunate to win), two dragons, many plates of cupcakes, and more designer cakes, which I can not remember at this time. After the cake walk everyone stuffed themselves with cake.
Feast was incredible. There was so much food no one could eat all the removes. There was shrimp cocktail, grilled chicken breast and grilled shrimp, lemon rice, burgundy cherry soup, crab cakes, whole crabs, stuffed rolled pork, seafood piallea, roast beef, and flan . Being at North Florida, all the food had to be brought from the kitchen to the big hall. It was during one of the trips that someone noticed that a camp fire seemed to be a little large. Then we realized that a tent was burning. It seems that a Tiki Torch fell over onto the tent and set it on fire. The servers streamed out of the hall with big pots of water and all the ice we had and put out the fire. Unfortunately, everything in the tent was destroyed but no one was hurt. The owners of the tent and equipment we helped out by the Barony and other guests with finances to see them safely home.

From the Historian of Wyvernwood, Lord Jens
The Barony remains the same, but what does change is noteworthy – First the same:
Meetings are held on Tuesday nights at 8:00 as they have been for time immemorial, Attendance is good though seems to vary after the summer but rises through other parts of the year. The last Tuesday night of each month is our Baronial Revel, which is in garb and normally features a dance class, food, and a short Baronial Court. Attendance is consistently good at Revels, and we seem to have been garnering some new members that show up on those nights. Messer Guiseppe is still teaching dance on every second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month as well as at Revels.
Now the changes:
At Baronial Bash, October 26 AS XXXI, Lady Catherine Abernethy will be handling the office of the Seneschal over to Messer Guiseppe da Borgio. The Herald’s Office has been turned over to Sir Severin Visconti di Milano. The revels will not longer be held at their present location of Carlton Arms. Sir Kar has received full funding and support for the Kingdom for building replicas of three wall sections of the Gulf Wars fort. These are to aid the Kingdom in practicing and preparing for future Gulf Wars battles, as well as designing and becoming proficient with seige weapons and engines that citizens of our fair Kingdom may design and construct. The need for such a replica became apparent when the house of Sir Karl Kyburg built a large wheeled ramp with which to attach the wall at Gulf Wars IV and V, and for GWV when Duke Sir Baldar fielded a very strong ballista. The construction of these wall segments will take place on 10-19-96 at Camp Immokalee, and volunteers will be needed, sheltered and fed for their help with the building of these sections.
Lady Ursula has become the head of the Kingdom Feast Server’s Guild as of Coronation. OUr Baronial Marshal Roland and his deputy Gordic are making a master list of authorization names and numbers, weapon styles, and expiration dates so that when gentles show up to fight they only need to give their authorization number or name and the Marshalate can okay them.
The Wyvernwood Consort is the seven piece period music ensemble that formed last year consisting of Lord Albert Snowden, Sir Braian McNaughton, Sir Severin Visconti di Milano, H.L. Kamala al Sharqui, Lady Dulcia MacPherson. Lord Godfrey de Shipbrook and Lord Jens Vetrar. The ambition of the Consort is to play for most Royal Courts and various feasts and festivities through-out the reign. Most members of the band wish to serve as an alternative to less appropriate, filler-type entertainments that might be offered. The Consort has now played for the Trimarian Royalty at Gulf Wars V, Messer Guiseppe da Borgio’s elevation to the Laureate and feast at Trimaris Memorial Tourney, Sunday night court and feast this past Coronation, and for Mistress Lisabeta Maria da Firenze’s elevation to the Laureate.
The son of our current and previous Seneschals, James Standish Jr., wrote this historian a letter with the news that last year when he was seven years old, he had a IKAC score of three points. That made him the youngest person in the Knowne World to have an IKAC score. He also has a verified claim of being the youngest archer in Trimaris now to have a Royal Round score of nine points. This does complete my account of the Barony of Wyvernwood in these current Middle Ages.

Talewinds April AS XXVIII, 1994 From the Crown, LLwyelyn, Rex Trimaris “I would like to thank the Kingdom, especially the Kingdom Officers, for sending and trusting me to represent Trimaris at Estrella during the meeting of the Crowns of the Known World. Estrella War …Every Crown was either present or represented except Drachenwald. The Crowns met in order to discuss the recent decisions and changes made by the board of Directors, and decide if any and what king of action needed to be taken regarding the BOD’s recent mandates and problems. It appeared to me the majority of the Crowns expressed deep concern not over the decisions the board had made bu the way they made them. Many of us there felt the BOD had acted hastily to a chronic problem and should have consulted at least some part of the participants of the society on issues of this magnitude. The participants of the SCA are the only resource we have and should be considered our most valuable asset. It is every SCA member’s commitment and money that allows all of us the freedom of fulfill our individual dreams and continue to live history.
The Crowns, by and large, felt the participants and members of the SCA are not represented by the BOD on many issues and felt that better representation for the society on governing policies was required. It was for these reasons that the Crowns drafted a request statement demand that the BOD take action to create better representation from the kingdoms. Essentially this draft was a formal request from the Kingdoms that the BOD be enlarged to 13 members, one from each Kingdom representing that Kingdom, as soon as possible. This is only a strong proposal and I do not know how the BOD will act upon it. All the Crowns present signed this draft, except for two, thereby making it a consensus from the Kingdoms of the Known World. Many other topics were discussed throughout the weekend: Pay for Play, the Budget, Accountability, rate increase, etc. Most of thse concerns the Crowns hope will be addressed by an expanded and better represented board.”

A Thank You
Talewinds April AS XXVIII, 1994 After hearing of the devastation in Hawaii following Hurricane Iniki, the Kingdom of Caid established the SCA Kauai Relief Fund. Once it was determined that there was no further need for relief funds in the Kingdoms of Meridies and Trimaris following Hurricane Andrew, the balance of the funds in the Trimarian-Meridian Relief Fund (more than $1,300.00) was transferred to the SCA Kauai Relief Fund. The following thank you letter arrived with a request that it be published in Talewinds. “We wish to send our heartfelt thanks to all who helped us after Hurricane Iniki devastated our Island. The care packages of much needed items sent from the Barony of the Western Seas and the Kingdom of Caid helped us when supplies were not available on this island. The SCA Kauai Relief Fund, organized by the mutual help of the Kingdoms of Trimaris, Meridies and Caid, helped us through financial difficulties. Letters, cards and calls were greatly appreciated. Your prayers, and kind concern were instrumental in helping us keep our spirits up. Although a year and a half has passed since the hurricane ravaged our island, we are still in the long recovery process, and have much left to do. Many of the buildings on our island were completely destroyed, and still remain as piles of rubble, ghostly reminders of the disaster. However, we press on toward our goal of recovery. We thank you for the continuing support and friendship that has been extended to us from all over the Known World. Raven of Heronsmarsh, Seneschal of the Incipient Canton of Peridot Isle
